Weekend Review

Saturday 28th August 2010

Caldicot Town stepped up their preperation for Wednesday nights league opener against Cwmbran Celtic with a convincing 5-1 win over Newport Civil Service who play in the Welsh League Third division. New signings Tom Hooper and Tom Elwick continue to impress with their performances along with many others in the squad. Caldicot Captain Gareth Heywood continued his rich vein of scoring after claiming two more pre-season goals, one with his head to make it 2-1 after the scores were level at 1-1 at the interval. His second would have graced any top game as the centre half collected the ball on the edge of the visitors area before chipping the ball up with his right before smashing a left foot volley into the top corner. Dominic Connor was in rampaging form down the left and scored a fine individual effort towards the end. Caldicot however know they will face a much sterner test on Wednesday night where they will be looking to gain revenge for the defeat suffered in the Gwent Senior Cup match played two weeks earlier. Kick off at Jubilee Way will be at 6.30pm.

Prior to this game the Reserves who are coached by Mike Dowler secured a fine 5-1 win against league rivals Newport YMCA. John McGinty who has stepped up from East Gwent football was the pick of the bunch as he grabbed a first half hatrick and an own goal to his name. The Reserves kick off their season on the 11 September at home against Newport Civil Service Reserves.

The East Gwent sides put out a mixed team to play away at Thornwell. In difficult conditions Caldicot went in at the break a goal down and conceded early in the second half. Matthew Williamson was asked to leave the field after dissent to the over fussy official but Caldicot managed to pull a goal back but lost by a 2-1 scoreline. Caldicot "B" kick off their campaign at home on Tuesday evening agaist Severn Tunnel. Caldicot "A" face the long trip to Monmouth on Thursday to start their season. Not sure what the fixture secretary is thinking here but for midweek games to start the season a more realistic option could have been found as both Rockwell and Monmouth have been given home games against Caldicot sides. Surely the two Monmouth sides and the two Caldicot sides could have been fixtured to play each other?

Weekend Review

Saturday 14th August 2010

Cwmbran Celtic came to Jubilee Way on Saturday to play Caldicot in the 1/4 final of the Gwent Senior Cup. The visitors looked strong and took the lead during the first half and should have added more before the break. The second half saw lots of "Huff and Puff" but not much "Dip and Whip" from Caldicot who were unable to take the game to extra time. Caldicot will have a chance to rectify this result when they face Cwmbran Celtic at home in what will be the league opener on Wednesday 1st September. Caldicot will know they face a tough game and will have to step up to the mark against a side that looked hungrier on the day.

Caldicot have arranged extra friendly's with the Reserves playing Chepstow Town on Tuesday night 17th (Ko 6.30pm) and Saturday 21st where the first team will play Croesyceiliog also at Jubilee Way.

Midweek Review

Tuesday 10th August 2010

Cwmbran were the visitors to Jubilee Way on Tuesday night where both clubs First and Reserves sides were on display. The Reserves kicked off first where Caldicot welcomed back Neil Windsor to the fold and Mat Addis. Caldicot ran out 2-0 winners with Neil Windsor scoring a penalty and John McGinty adding a second.

The First team game got underway in what was a fairly even match with both sides creating chances to open the score. Caldicot scored the only goal of the game after Gareth Cullimore was fouled in the area and David Lloyd just about beat the keeper to make the score 1-0.

Both sides made several changes during the game and into the second half Cwmbran pressed hard for an equaliser that they probably on balance deserved. Caldicot looked dangerous on the counter and with better choice making could have added to the total.

Final score: Caldicot 1 v 0 Cwmbran

Next up for Caldicot is the Gwent Senior cup match against Cwmbran Celtic at Jubilee Way this coming Saturday the 14th August. Kick Off will be at 2.30pm

The East Gwent sides will form a squad to play last years visitors from Bristol, Hallam Fc. That game is due to Ko at 1pm also at Jubilee Way.

Monday 9th August 2010

A Caldicot Town delegation once again hit the road to attend a WL special meeting set up to try and sort out the debacle that has ensued thus far to try and sort out how many clubs will be in the league. As expected the FAW refused the proposal of having 54 team play across the three leagues and enforced on the WL committee that the 1st & 2nd division should be made up of 16 teams and the 3rd of 18 due to Risca and Pontyclun winning their appeal to stay in based on ground criteria.

Alan Watkins of Llanwern spoke out against this and suggested a motion should be voted on to appeal against this decision. At last most clubs it seemed were against this as the likelyhood of us playing football this season was dwindelling as we are already looking at a September start. So the vote was won unanimously for the FAW proposal of 16, 16, 18 teams for season 2010/11.

Tony Griffiths then explained that the season would not start until Wednesday 1st September. Although this is late our side will only play 30 games instead of 34 so we will probably still finish in May due to the delays incured so far.

The League cup draw was also made on the night with 14 clubs receiving a bye and Caldicot Town were drawn at home to Corus Steel. The league cup fixtures will be played on Saturday 25 September 2010 kicking off at 2.pm

Caldicot Town 1st and Reserve team take on Cwmbran Town 1st and Reserves tonight at Jubilee Way with Ko around 6.45pm

Weekend Review

Saturday 7th August 2010

Caldicot Town entertained 3 visiting sides from Morriston Olympic which consisted of a Reserve, U18 and First team game.

The Reserves were first off just after 1pm and just after a torrential downpour that would come and go throughout the day. Caldicot looked to have the lions share of possesion but Morriston looked lively and dangerous on the break. The visitors who were shouted on by the other visiting players from the first and U18'S game were soon quitened as Caldicot took control of the game that they would lead through to the finish.

The Under 18's who under Darren Canty had spent the morning raising money packing shopping bags for punters of Tesco in Chepstow kicked off just after 3pm on the East Gwent pitch against a good Olympic youth side. The visitors from Morriston took the lead with a well struck free kick from just outside the box. Caldicot equalised before the break with a well worked goal and both sides could have added to their total before the half was out. In a well contested match officiated by Wayne Jones the score eventually finished in a 2-2 draw.

The First team then took centre stage and took control of the game early on as they found their passing game from the back with good performanced by all the back four which saw the return to the side of Captain Gareth Heywood. Caldicot also have Simon Crook at right back and Shane Jeremiah at left back giving manager Jason Pritchard plenty of options as they look to secure their own places in the team and with the classy Andrew Wenzel looking solid at centre half the back line looks solid. Now Thorn has moved on replacing him was sure going to prove a challenge. However Chris Pearce has looked sharp and scored 2 more goals yesterday matching the form of hot shot Gareth Cullimore who showed his class with a wonderful goal that had all in attendance applauding the effort. Richard Sharratt got proceedings under way after he smashed a half volley into the net.

Although some regualrs will be unhappy that we have not attracted a top WPL side to the club this year the friendlies we have played have still proven worthwhile. The management will not often learn anything from seeing his players chasing shadows although there is an argument that these games can be good for fitness. Playing games like we have to date can actually show the Management what his players are capable of doing when given time on the ball and I thhink to date the Management team will have learnt what his squad are capable of doing and maybe any limitations would have been noted too.

The next games at Jubilee Way are on Tuesday 10th August as Cwmbran Town visit with their First and Reserve Teams. These games will I'm sure prove to be a sterner test as Cwmbran will be looking to bounce back from what will be seen by many as a few disappointing seasons.

Weekend Review - 31 July 2010

Caldicot Town hosted three friendly matches at Jubilee Way on Saturday and will be pleased by the performances especially as these were the first games of the season.

Caldicot Reserves 4 v 2 Spencer Boys

First up were Gwent County division one outfit Spencer Boys who provided a stern test to Caldicot's team made up of mainly Reserve team players with one or two involved from last years first team squad. Spencer Boys took the lead early on and went further in front as Caldicot started slowly. Spencer Boys could have increased their lead further but into the second half, Caldicot responded and started to threaten the visitors goal. Caldicot now had the returning Tyrone Tucker-Dixon up front and he got on the score sheet as Spencer Boys started to look tired. Caldicot eventually ran out 4-2 winners but new Reserve team manager, Mike Dowler will have learnt a few things about his players.

Caldicot Town 4 v 0 Shepton Mallet

With joint manager Simon Wetter away on holiday, Jason Pritchard took sole control of Caldicot 1st team which saw the side retain the services of all but one player from last years squad as Jason Thorn looking likely to sign for last years league winners Goytre United. This though has opened the door for somone in the squad to cement a place in the team and form a successful partnership along side last seasons hot shot Gareth Cullimore. Starting in pole position was Chris Pearce who was still recovering from an injury when he signed part way through last season but early reports are the striker is looking sharp in training and he did his chance no harm by heading a goal in todays game as well.

Shepton who were playing their fourth friendly of the season were an unknown quantity to Caldicot as the visitors ply there trade in the Western League Division One. Caldicot who finished a very creditable 4th in the Welsh League First Division last season wanted to get into the groove early and this was acheived although the score remained 0-0 at the break. Shepton were unlucky to fall behind early in the second half as Caldicot's Richard Sharratt looked to have hindered a Shepton defender in trying to make a goalmouth clearence. Gareth Cullimore bagged himself a couple of goals and his strike partner Chris Pearce nodded in a pin point cross from right back Simon "Chip" Crook. All in all this was a very encouraging performance seeming this was the sides first outing and with potential signings still in the offing, the future is looking bright.

Next up for the first team will be Abercarn who have replaced PILCS for Tuesdays nights friendly which kicks off at Jubilee Way at 7pm

Caldicot Town East Gwent IX 0 v 2 Sea Mills Park FC

A mixed side made up of last seasons 3rds & 4th teams congregated on the top pitch to face Sea Mills Park who play in the Bristol & District league division one. The visitors claimed a 2-0 win in a competative fixture.

News update 27 July 2010

A club delegation attended a Welsh League "Special General Meeting" held at Sophia Gardens last night to try and resolve the current issue of how many teams will play in the Welsh League at the start of season 2010/11. The FAW had suggested to the Welsh League Committee that both the 1st & 2nd divisions will hold 16 teams and the 3rd division 18 due to both Risca and Pontyclun winning their appeal to stay in the league due to there respective grounds meeting ground criteria.

Many clubs affected by this purge of clubs from the league were in full support of each other and after a vote it was decided that the Welsh League Committee would go back to the FAW with the proposition that the league would remain at 54 teams (18 per division).

As a club we voted to go with the FAW recommendations as the seasons over the years have been running through to the end of May. From a purely selfish point of view this provides very little time to carry out essential out of season repair works to the football fields. This season for example we have not been able to arrange friendlies at home until 2 weeks before the season is sue to start leaving the management team little time to prepare for the following campaign.

I do feel some sympathy towards the clubs who will lose Welsh League status but all clubs were aware of the numbers to be relegated at the start of the year. In season 2008/2009 we finished 5th from bottom which had that had been this year, we would have gone down like Ton Pentre are due to unless the FAW agree to the new proposal. Many of the clubs voting for the 54 teams are directly affected by the outcome and it was felt that they were looking after their own interests and not really that of the affected clubs who would drop out of the league. That said I'm sure the teams affected did drum up some support from local clubs close to themselves.

If the FAW does agree to the WL keeping 54 teams then the cull will take place this coming season 2010/11 and the Welsh League will not slip up again and base it on ground criteria but instead on "Sporting Achievement". So to the clubs who voted yes I do hope this decision does not come back to haunt you if the 54 teams decision is agreed as there will be no appeal and no other votes of solidarity to keep you up should any of us finish in the affected relegation spots.

Some clubs will feel they dodged a bullet this year but may find themselves having to do so for a second year in a row and I'm betting those teams who are in a precarious place presently will survive come the end of next season should we start the season at a status quo.

So now we wait again for a decision with the season just over two weeks away. If the fixtures are not agreed soon we could be kicking off not only near the end of August but possibly with 34 games to play plus cup. Best not to go booking an end of season tour or a summer holiday with the missus in May 2011 thats a sure thing!!

QUE SE RA SE RA!!

May 22nd - Marston Stadium Afan Lido Ko: 7.30pm

Caldicot Town 1 v 0 Pontardawe

Caldicot Town broke the hoodoo and ended their 10 match unbeaten run by beating Pontardawe Town 1-0 at Afan Lido in what was the last game of the season. This meant that Caldicot finished in fourth place pipping Bryntirion by a point to secure the teams highest finish for many years. Dominic Connor scored the only goal of the game played on a baking surface in boiling conditions. Congratulations to all the players coaching staff (Mike Dowler), Physio (Chris Hughes) and Managers, Jason Pritchard and Simon Wetter on having a great season where we have finished as Gwent's top side for the second year running. I'm sure all the above mentioned would like to thank all the loyal support they have received all year from the supporters who come and shout on the team at home and to the hardcore who are always present at the away games too.

Goytre finished the season as champions so congratulations to them but they were pushed all the way by Cambrian & Clydach who beat West End away to finish in second place just one point off Goytre. Croesyceiliog are the team standing in the way of the league and cup double for Goytre so good luck to the Gwent outfit who face Goytre on Tuesday 25th May at the Brewery Field, home of Bridgend Town. Kick off will be at 7pm and I know Caldicot supporters are going along to watch and shout on Croesy.

Welsh League

May 18th - Brewery Field Ko: 7.30pm

Caldicot Town 0 v 2 Bridgend

Caldicot travelled to Bridgend to face under achieving Bridgend Town but found there hosts to strong as they they went down 2-0. Caldicot were without Jacob Guy, Andrew Wenzel, Shane Jeremiah, Dan Rowberry and Ben Roberts who are all defenders and so Richard Sharratt, Steve Edwards, and Dominic Connor were all asked to play at the back along side regular defender and team captain Gareth Heywood. With David Lloyd also missing through a serious injury picked up on Saturday against Afan Lido, you could argue that Caldicot were under strength but Caldicot have had a good reserve of players to call upon through the year and so in came Will Vers, Nick Bright, Lewis Cutajar and Simon Crook.

Bridgend were first to settle with Caldicot looking anxious and often mislaying passes intended for team mates. Caldicot's make shift defence had there hands full as the Bridgend forwards looked full of pace and movement. In the past few games Caldicot have conceded early goals and tonight was no exception as Caldicot found themselves 1-0 down before the game was 10 minutes old. Bridgend attacked at pace down the left where Caldicot failed to deal with the player who rounded Steve Edwards before squaring a pass to an unmarked Bridgend forward to tap in.

Caldicot looked rattled and reverted to knocking long balls up top for Cullimore who was being well marshalled by the Bridgend defence. Thorn and Chris Pearce were also finding the going tough as they tried to manufacture chances but to no avail. Kel Stevens delivered a couple of good freekicks into the danger area but there was little or no real belief from Caldicot in making use of these balls. Before the half Bridgend increased the lead as the Bridgend forward attacked Dominic Connor down the left and after beating him he again squared a pass that was unfortunately turned in to his own not by Steve Edwards with no attacking player present. This summed up how things are going for Caldicot who have not won in nine games and are more than glad to have the points in the bag that will ensure a top 5 finish although current form would have them in the bottom 5.

Caldicot made a change as Edwards was replaced by Simon Crook at right back and after some words at half time, Caldicot picked there game up. Lewis Cutajar and Nick Bright who are both under 20 years old came on to replace Stevens and Williams. With nothing to lose and the chance to make a good impression, all the subs that came on performed well and the mood of the unhappy supporters was somewhat lifted. Caldicot pressed but could not quite find the telling pass or cross to breakdown the Bridgend defence but there were at least some encouraging signs that Caldicot would not go down with a whimper. Bridgend were playing on the counter attack and could have added to their total but the game which was well officiated ended with a 2-0 scoreline to Bridgend.

Caldicot Town 1 v 4 Afan Lido

Caldicot Scorers: J.Thorn

Caldicot Town's season looks to be grinding to a halt as they suffered a second defeat in a row succumbing to Afan Lido's superior strength around the park. Lido were out of the blocks quick and scored their first after 5 minutes from a corner which had not been cleared and defender Carl Evans smashed the ball past the helpless Smallcombe to make it 1-0. Lido claimed a second before the half as Mark Jones scored his first of the game. Caldicot huffed and puffed but could not find the breakthrough.

The second half got under way and within 10 minutes of it starting Caldicot scored through Jason Thorn who bagged his 3rd in 2 games to move to 27 goals for the season, just 2 behind Gareth Cullimore. Lido though came back again and scored another through Mark Jones who later completed his hatrick via the penalty spot to ensure the league double was completed over Caldicot. Lido were worthy winners and we wish them all the best in their quest for a WPL place. The win moved Lido into second behind Goytre who won at West End. Cambrian sit third and can go back above Lido although they face Bryntirion and West End both away. Lido's last game should be a cracker as they face Goytre at home where a win could see them win the title as both teams currently have the same goal difference but Goytre are 3 points in front. Caldicot's next game is away at the Brewery Field on Tuesday night where they face Bridgend who have had a below par season for their standards. That said the form guide would point to a home win unless Caldicot can finish there excellent season on a high?

 Caldicot Town v Bryntirion Athletic

Welsh League

Saturday 8th May 2010

Caldicot Town 3 v 3 Bryntirion Athletic

Caldicot Scorers: G.Cullimore 2, R.Sharratt 1

Caldicot salvaged a point against 10 man Brynririon with just minutes to spare thanks to a late headed Gareth Cullimore goal which was his second of the day. With a steady breeze blowing down the ground, both sides looked stronger with the wind at there backs. The game was open and felt like a typical end of season game where both sides are looking for a top 3 finish. Caldicot reverted to a 4-4-2 formation which saw top goal scorer Cullimore start at right midfield with Thorn and Pearce up top. The first real gilt edge chance fell to Pearce who shinned a shot over the bar from 6 yards after Thorn had squared a ball from the left. Right back Dan Rowberry who settled into the game after an unsteady start also found himself with a chance from a header from a set piece which he diverted just wide. Bryntirion did not threaten the Caldicot goal and found Smallcombe in good form as his handling was secure throughout the game and so the score remained 0-0 at the break

Into the second half and Brytirion with the breeze at their backs looked to press Caldicot into there own half. Caldicot however were to take the lead after a handling mistake from the visiting keeper let Thorn in and he was able to roll the ball square across the goal line for Cullimore who won't have scored an easier goal this season to put Caldicot ahead. Caldicot looked comfortable and mad a substitution bringing on Richard Sharratt for Steve Edwards. Bryntirion fought back and dominated for a spell as Caldicot seemed to lose some rhythm and duly got an equaliser after Smallcombe threw out a pass that was intercepted when kicking long would have probably been a better option? This led to the equaliser which swung momentum Bryntirions way. The visitors then took the lead and Caldicot looked shaken and made a double substitution bringing on Williams and Heywood for Rowberry and Pearce. Heywood's rash challenge caused more pressure on the home side who found themselves 2-1 down and looking unlikely to get themselves back in the game.

With around 10 minutes remaining the game got interesting as Bryntirion went down to ten men as they lost a midfielder who in all honesty should have departed well before he did. From the freekick which was on the left edge of the box, Caldicot equalised as Richard Sharratt rose at the back post to head in David Lloyds free kick. The game was now delicately poised at 2-2 but Caldicot had a one man advantage which they struggled to capitalize on as Bryntirion would score once more to make it 3-2. Caldicot failed to track the Bryntirion left back who marauded forward and supplied a cross that was struck goalwards. The ball beat Smallcombe who pulled off a couple of stunning saves during the half only to hit the foot of the post and bounce back out for a Bryntirion player knock home. That seemed to knock the stuffing out of the Caldicot side who seemed determined to lose a game they should be winning. With barely minutes seconds remaining in the game Caldicot won a corner which Lloyd swung in and with everyone in the box including Caldicot keeper Smallcombe, Gareth Cullimore rose highest to bundle the ball home to the relief of all the players, management and Caldicot supporters present

So the game kicked off and the referee blew his whistle as the game ended 3-3. Both sides will look back at the game and think they should have won but the result was probably a fair one in the end. Caldicot's next game is a trip to Wenvoe where they take on Ely Rangers who are fighting for survival as they sit in the bottom five of the Table. Afan Lido and Cambrian played out a 1-1 draw and Goytre lost at home to West End so a win today for Caldicot would have put them back in the frame but it would seem there will be a few more twists in the race for the title before an eventual victor emerges.

Caldicot Town 1 v 2 Pontardawe Town

Scorers: J.Thorn

Caldicot Town suffered a rare home defeat at the hands of improving Pontardawe who are fighting hard to avoid relegation with 5 expected to lose first division status. This win has pushed Pontardawe into the safe zone and at the same time knocked Caldicot's hopes of finishing in the top three. Jason Thorn scored Caldicot's only goal of the game to push his tally towards the 30 mark but it was not enough as Caldicot failed to find the target in the second half which they dominated after Pontardawe controlled the majority of the first half. Next up at home see's the visit of Bryntirion who leaped above Caldicot after they overcame Garden Village away from home.

Caldicot Town Reserves 4 v 1 Abertillery Bluebirds Reserves

Scorers: P.Light 2, N.Murphy 2

Caldicot Town finished their season on a high beating Abertillery 4-1 away from home. Recent results had not been good for Caldicot having lost twice and drawing a couple as their season drew to a close. Today was a more vintage performance that saw Caldicot go back to the top of the league if only for a short time. Caldicot will have no bearing on where they finish in the table as they have completed their fixtures with many of the sides immediately below poised to pass Caldicot if they win their games in hand. After an interesting Bus journey through the tight hilly streets of Abertillery the Caldicot side settled into the game but were finding it hard playing their 3-5-2 system. With many regular reserve team players unavailable, players from the "A" & "B" team were given a chance and they didn't disappoint. Nathan Murphy the 20 year old battering ram played along side the experienced Paul Light who although is entering the latter stages of his career still has the skills to perform and showed why he is top of the goalscoring chart at present.

Caldicot were also strengthened by the return of Captain Neil Windsor who galvanizes the youngsters at the back. Caldicot reverted back to 4-4-2 and took the lead going into the break with a fine goal that would have blessed any top game. John Reed found himself in space down the right and delivered a great ball into the box where Paul Light was able to place a header back out to the edge of the box where Nathan Murphy smashed a left foot volley into the top corner. Into the second half and Caldicot were able to extend the lead to 2-0 after a class goal from Paul Light. Light found himself 30 yards out and being marked tightly. Light then chipped the ball over his own head before launching a dipping volley over the home keeper to extend the lead. Murphy then added another with a well taken finish to put Caldicot in control but the Bluebirds did not give up and they were able to pull one back before Caldicot won a penalty which Light took to make it 4-1.

East Gwent - 27th April 2010

Caldicot Town 5 v 0 Sudbrook CC (@ Larkfield, Chepstow)

Scorers: P.Light 2, B.Miles 1, J.McKeon 1, S.Crook

Caldicot Town "A"finished off the season with an emphatic win over rivals Chepstow Town last night. The victory ensured a 3rd place finish in the league which was fiercely contested this year with no more than 3 points separating the top four clubs.

Paul Light finished the season with 32 goals and can only realistically be caught by 1st team hot shot Gareth Cullimore for the much coveted Golden Boot award. Cullimore sits on 27 goals which is a remarkable achievement at Welsh League level and has 6 more games left to try and topple Lights final goals tally.

Caldicot will probably finish on the same points tally as Tintern but they have a far superior goal difference tally after demolishing Wyesham on two occasion scoring well over double figures.

All in all it has been a successful season for both of our clubs as Steve Bright on his debut season in charge led his troops to a second place finish in the league and a cup final win over Chepstow to match the cup final victory the "A" team secured last Friday night against Sudbrook CC.

A very big Well Done to both Frank and Steve and all the players for all the efforts shown this season

============================================================

Congratulations to Frank Rowberry and Caldicot "A" in winning the Gill Cup final on Friday 23rd April at Jubilee Way....the unofficial home of football

CALDICOT TOWN 3 v 2 SUDBROOK CC (aet)

East Gwent "Gill Cup Final"

Caldicot Town 3 v 2 Sudbrook CC (2-2 After Normal Time)

Caldicot Town "A" made it two final victories in successive weeks following on from the "B" teams success last week over Chepstow Town. Caldicot faced a stubborn Sudbrook side who proved to be a tough nut to crack on the night especially when Caldicot who were tagged as favourites found themselves two nil down. Sudbrook opened the scoring after a freekick was fumbled by Dave "The Drop" Heywood in the Caldicot goal and a Sudbrook player was on hand to tap in. Caldicot went further behind as another mistake cost them a goal and so the favourites were trailing by two at the break. The second half started better for the Town and Simon Crook was on target with a beautifully hit freekick that found the top corner. Caldicot leveled proceedings after James McKeon came on and started to threaten upfront but a winner could not be found by either side and so the game went into extra time. Cometh the hour, Cometh the man as Paul Light stepped up to score the winner in the first period of extra time which took his tally to 30 for the season! James "Pig" Lawrence had to be stretchered off the field after a career ender (self inflicted) which saw him break a metatarsal in one of his trotters and then Caldicot's enforcer, Tony Jones was shown a red card after trying to smash a Sudbrook player into the crowd. Although down to 10 men, Sudbrook failed to beat Dave "Safe Hands" Heywood who recovered well from his earlier show of cup final nerves.

Welsh League

Caldicot Town 1 v 2 Afan Lido

Caldicot's title hopes took a dive after suffering an away defeat at the hands of title contenders Afan Lido. The home side who are looking to finish in the top two and gain promotion to the WPL got off to a lively start testing Smallcombe in the Caldicot goal after one minute. Caldicot took time to settle down but soon got going down the left flank via Dominic Connor. On a pitch in similar condition to that of Caldicot's, playing neat tidy attractive football was quite a challenge but was achieved in sporadic bursts. Caldicot threatened from a couple of freekicks given away by Lido around the box and Jason Thorn in particular smashed one goalbound only to see his effort tipped onto the cross bar by the Lido Keeper. Caldicot had Gareth Heywood to thank when making a goal line clearance and a further Lido effort hit the bar. With time running out in the half the home side took the lead after Caldicot failed to clear a corner. Top marksman Robbie Walters punished the visitors to make it 1-0. Caldicot would have taken that scoreline to go into the interval where they could have regrouped but the task of getting anything from the game was made alot harder as Lido scored again before the break. This time the ball was played towards the left of the area to Robbie Walters who was offered to much respect as he was allowed to collect and turn with the ball before hitting a shot that was saved by Smallcombe only to see the rebound put away by Nathan White.

The second half saw Lido dominate early exchanges but gradually Caldicot gained a foothold and managed a few more efforts on goal. Richard Sharratt found himself with a reasonably free header in the box which he put over. The action was end to end and on 67 minutes Caldicot hot shot Gareth Cullimore scored a classic overhead kick which gave the home keeper little chance. The momentum was swinging the visitors way but Lido were still dangerous on the counter attack. With time running out Lido broke and Mark Jones broke the full length of the pitch only to see his shot blocked in a great tackle by Jason Thorn. Testament to him as there are not many striker in this league who would run the full length of the pitch to make a goal saving tackle as he did. Caldicot had one last effort headed off the line which would have given the visitors a draw whether or not it would have been just result could be argued the fact is Lido won the game and now sit second behind Goytre who won away at Ely Rangers. Lido still have some tough games left and travel to Caldicot next month for the return fixture which I'm sure the Caldicot lads will want to win. Caldicot face Pontardawe next Saturday at home in another must win game if they are to maintain a top three finish.

Gwent County U16's

Caldicot Town 3 v 2 Rogerstone

Darren Canty’s under 16 side gained revenge for their County Cup Semi Final defeat to Rogerstone with a thrilling 3-2 away win. Caldicot started in a whirlwind fashion taking a third minute lead through Jamie Watts. Encouraged by this Caldicot played some sparkling football and added further goals through a Tom Atkins double to lead 3-0 after only 15 minutes.

Caldicot continued to dominate the game and further goals looked likely with the Rogerstone keeper denying them with some fine saves. Five minutes from half time and totally against the run of play Rogerstone pulled a goal back when a long through ball flicked off the head of the impressive Ryan Thomas past stand in ‘keeper Oliver Jones for an own goal. Within a minute Rogerstone had the opportunity to add to their tally when they were awarded a penalty. The spot kick struck an upright and was cleared for a corner. Then in stoppage time Rogerstone were right back in the game when they broke away again and scored to make it 3-2. The second half was an end to end affair with chances at both ends. Midway through the half Caldicot lost midfielder Kyle McCabe who was taken to hospital with a fractured Collarbone but eventually held out for the win despite some intense pressure in the closing few minutes.  It was a fine team performance with every player impressing.

Midweek Review

21st April 2010

Welsh League

Caldicot Town 1 v 1 Barry Town

Caldicot Town's hopes of winning the Welsh League title is in the balance after they recorded a fourth draw in a row against visiting Barry Town. Caldicot's away trip to face Afan Lido has now become a must win game probably for both teams on Saturday as Lido look to overturn the decision not to grant them a UEFA club license that would see them promoted into the WPL if they secure a top two finish.

Caldicot's top goal scorer Gareth Cullimore opened the scoring on the night after good work from Daniel Rowberry. The pitch was very hard which made a slick passing game almost impossible but Barry and Caldicot both tried to get the ball down and play. Barry did not let the goal affect the way they played and would have equalised if not for the athletic ability of James Smallcombe in the Caldicot goal as he plucked a save out of the top corner from a Barry Town headed effort.

That said the Barry Town keeper made 3 great saves in the first half to deny Cullimore, Pearce and Connor who found themselves in good positions with just the keeper to beat. Into the second half and Barry salvaged parity as they found an early equaliser. Both sides defenses were snuffing out both sides attacking threats but Barry found James Smallcombe in the way once more as his string of impressive saves kept Caldicot in the game. Towards the end Caldicot pressed but could not find the net as both Cullimore and Thorn created half chances for themselves. So another draw against these two sides but once again it was probably a fair result with the only failure on the night being a couple of the floodlights that failed to come on so apologies to all players and supporters for that.

East Gwent Fishwick Cup Final - 16 April 2010

 Caldicot Town 2 v 1 Chepstow Town

Weekend Review

16/17th April 2010

Welsh League

Goytre United  1 v 1 Caldicot Town

Caldicot Town kept up the dream of winning the Welsh League title when they secured a point away at table topping Goytre. The main aim was to win the game and then the game in hand but equally important was not to lose the game in what is turning out to be a make or break weak for the Monmouthshire side. Caldicot took the lead through Dan Rowberry and should have added another through Chris Pearce. The visitors replied through prolific marksman Richard Ryan and created several more chances in the second half and were again thankful to James Smallcombe in the Caldicot Goal in keeping the home side at bay. Again another good result on the road against a very experienced side who have been in these positions many times before so all in all another step of progression for Pritchard and Wetter's boys.

Well done Lads

Reserves - Caldicot Town 1 v 2 Newport YMCA

Caldicot Town went down disappointingly at home in what was their last home league game of the season. Cwmbran Celtic have now leapfrogged Caldicot into top spot which was expected due to the good form they are showing but Mark Anderson the manager of the reserves was disappointed that we did not make it easy for the teams below and must now win the last game away at Abertillery on the 1st May to ensure a top four placed finish. Caldicot took the lead through Ben Miles who smashed in an unstoppable volley after 10 minutes to make things fairly comfortable for the home side. YM got back in the game before the break to square things up and this seemed to affect the Caldicot side who struggled to get into their stride again. Chances came at both ends are there were good performances from the centre half pairing of Cutajar and Bright but Caldicot seemed to lack a real cutting edge even though they played with three up front for most of the second half. After a great start to the season Caldicot are in danger of letting a good season turn into an average one and this would be undeserved after the way they have acquitted themselves this year. Caldicot must win their last game to end on a high and finish the season well.

East Gwent - Fishwick Cup Final @ Jubilee Way, Ko 6.30pm

Caldicot Town "B" 2 v 1 Chepstow Town "B"

With Caldicot "B" team manager Steve Bright stuck in the states due to the Volcanic ash halting all flights in and out of the UK, the managerial responsibilities fell to "A" team manager Frank Rowberry who has past Cup Final winning experience. Although one Bright was away the other , Steve's son Nick was on had to open the scoring for Caldicot which turned out to be an equalizing goal as Chepstow had taken an early lead. At this stage of the season the Welsh League pitch becomes difficult to play on and this was a major factor in the quality of football on display. Still into the second half and Caldicot looked the stronger and Steve "Bullet Tooth" Hepple had little to do through out the remainder of the match. Caldicot scored the winner after fine work from Will McConnell down the left side. His cross was met at the far post by prolific scorer Simon Hathaway to seal the win with celebrations going on till early morning.

Well Done Lads!!

Caerleon 0 v 0 Caldicot Town

Caldicot Town Reserves came away from Caerleon with a point in what turned out to be a fair result. Mark O'hara came on as a second half sub and nearly scored the winner when put through on goal by Dave Jenkins but lashed his shot what of the target. At the other end Nick Hardy spilled a ball that nearly cost the team but the Caldicot stopper managed to avert disaster. Caerleon were dominant in the air but on a poor playing surface quality football from both teams was something of a rarity. Caldicot Reserves now face Abertillery Bluebirds at home this Saturday.

Weekend Review

3rd April 2010

Caldicot Town 0 v 0 Barry Town

Caldicot Town maintained second spot in the table as they took a point back home from Jenner Park in what turned out to be the only game played in the first division. The conditions were sunshine and showers which led to tricky conditions for both sides but credit to both teams who both tried to play football when possible.

Barry started the brighter of the two teams and looked more dominant in the midfield areas. Both goal keepers looked assured in their handling and indeed both defenses were standing strong. Caldicot hot shot Jason Thorn had two bites of the Cherry after Cullimore had flicked on a header but on both occasions the Barry keeper stood strong. Caldicot were indebted to Smallcombe at the other end after Barry striker Ian Jones beat the Caldicot defence but saw his effort saved by the Caldicot stopper.

The second half saw Caldicot look a little more adventurous in attack and after a slight infringement saw Thorn latch onto a through ball before rounding the keeper to slot the ball in the net. The referee however blew his whistle as Thorn latched onto the pass and so brought the play back for the original Caldicot free kick, just the sort of decision that drives both players and managers mad. Nothing came of the free kick and so play continued with Barry lashing a couple of lovely balls across the six yard line but with no one to get on the end.

Caldicot looked tired after a tough midweek game against current champions Aberaman but still had one more clear cut chance to win the game after a cross was delivered from the left, Cullimore rose in the area between two Barry defenders to head towards goal but his effort went agonisingly wide. Drama came at the other end when indecision between Captain Gareth Heywood and Jacob Guy nearly saw Barry through on goal and on another occasion Smallcombe came thundering out of his box but missed the ball to give the traveling Caldicot fans a heart in the mouth moment.

In fairness the result was a fair one and again it is a measure of Caldicot's improvement this season when the team can come to places like Jenner park and get a result. Caldicot travel to Cardiff next week to face Cardiff Corries.

 Weekend Review

27 March 2010

Welsh League:

Caldicot Town's first team completed the double over Bettws after a fine 4-1 win at home. Gareth Cullimore added another goal to his impressive tally and Jason Thorn got back in the race for the clubs much coveted Golden Boot award after scoring a hatrick to seal another impressive win in what is turning out to be a very good season. Caldicot next face Aberaman at home on the 31st and will be looking to gain revenge after suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of the incumbent Welsh League Champions earlier in the season. Captain Gareth Haywood is hoping to shake off a knock to play in Wednesdays game.

Caldicot Reserves Suffered their heaviest defeat for a long time when they went down 7-2 away at Croesyceiliog. Caldicot took the lead through a fine Tom Moore header and had another goal disallowed for offside before 30 minutes of disaster after Croesy ran riot scoring a fine equaliser before further goals were added making the score 5-1 at the interval. Caldicot had both subs on and lost Ben Miles with a slight concussion and Dave Jenkins with a Stomach upset. Caldicot missed a couple of glorious opportunities before the "Prolific" Simon Crook headed in his third goal in three games to make it 5-2. Croesy then had a player sent off but proceeded to add two more goals to their already impressive tally to gain revenge for last weeks four nil defeat at the hands of Caldicot.

East Gwent:

Caldicot Town "A" travelled to Wyesham Wanderers and came away with maximum points after securing a 6-1 win. Wyesham took a shock lead but fell my the way to the quality of Caldicot as the match progressed. Scorers were Lee Moreton, Paul Light, Scott McKeon, Adrian Porter, James Lawrence and Jamie Watts

Caldicot Town "B" rounded off their first season with a 3-1 win away at Sudbrook CC to keep them top of the league with just Blackrock Rovers who can catch them. Steve Hepple, John McGinty and Nathan Murphy were Caldicot's scorers and manager Steve Bright even came off the bench and hit an upright before the end of the game. Caldicot's last match of the season will be a Cup Final against Chepstow Town.

Weekend Review

20 March 2010

Welsh League:

Caldicot Town's first teams away game at Pontardawe was called off due to heavy rain. The notorious pitch at Pontardawe tends to hold water and having travelled all the way there in the past two seasons only to be told the game is off, the Caldicot players and management were happy they had early notice. Caldicot now face Caerleon at home on Tuesday night for a semi final place against Monmouth Town in the Gwent Senior Cup. Kick off is at 7pm.

Caldicot Reserves came out on top against Croesyceiliog who will have an early chance of avenging this 4-0 defeat when the two teams face each other next Saturday at Woodland Road. David Lloyd who is recovering from injury and Dan Rowberry were additions to the Reserves from the first team and were replacements for the absent Tom Moore and youngster Mark Carter Selwood. It was Lloyd who showed his class with two superb freekicks and should have had a hatrick after playing a one two on the edge of the Croesy box with Dave Jenkins before rounding the keeper only for a Croesy defender to slide in to make a goal saving clearance. At the break Caldicot were two up having seen Lloyd score his first freekick of the game Caldicot made it two after a well taken goal that saw the ball played wide into the path of Jenkins who squared into the path of Watkins who smashed home. The second interval saw Lloyd score his second freekick before Simon Crook scored his second goal in a week after he collected the ball in the area he lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper to wrap the game up.

East Gwent:

Caldicot Town "A" travelled over the town to face Sudbrook CC and came away with a 5-0 win. What was pleasing was that Caldicot were without many regulars through injury and unavailability such as Paul Light, Tony Jones, Adrian Porter and Ray Jeremiah who have both been running the side in the absents of Frank Rowberry. Mitchell Slape and John McGinty were called up from the "B" team and both scored two each with Andrew Bundock adding the fifth

Weekend Preview

Welsh League:

Caldicot Town travel to Swansea again this weekend to play Pontardawe and will be looking to bounce back from last weeks defeat at West End. Andrew Wenzel and Shane Jeremiah are both out through injury with Chris Pearce also unavailable.

Caldicot Reserves face a double header against Croesyceiliog over the next two Saturdays where they are always strong performers in the Reserve League and will pose a strong threat to any hopes Caldicot have of winning the league. Caldicot will be without Tom Moore and Mark Carter-Selwood but will be strengthened by the return to Reserve team action of Mark O'Hara and a Reserve team debut for Terry Boston.

East Gwent:

Caldicot Town "A" face a short journey across town to play Sudbrook CC "A". With Big Frank still away, managerial duties have fallen with Adrian Porter. Paul Light, Dave Smith, Ray Jeremiah and Tony Jones are unavailable due to injuries and holidays but with Caldicot "B" not in action there is an opportunity to have a look at a few of the players.

Caldicot Town Reserves 2 v 1 Dinas Powys Reserves

Date/Venue: 17 March - Jubilee Way

Ko: 7.30pm

Caldicot Town Reserves came through a tight game against the visitors from Cardiff. The game was a tight affair with the first half void of any real talking points as the players battled with the bobbly pitch. Caldicot did go in at the break 1-0 up thanks to a Simon Crook touch on a freekick delivered by Chris Pearce. After the break Dinas applied good pressure but Caldicot stood firm although they struggled to keep any sort of possession. Lewis Cutajar had to come off injured and was replaced by John Reed. Caldicot scored again after fine work from Tom Moore who managed to play the ball into Ben Miles in the centre of the pitch. Miles was able to get his head up and play a ball into the path of Chris Pearce who's first touch nearly got away from him but his following touch saw him dispatch the ball past the Dinas keeper. Dinas to their credit battle away and won themselves a penalty after a clumsy challenge from Roberts. The penalty was dispatched ensuring a nervy finish to the game for Caldicot who now face Croesyceiliog over the next two weekends.

It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Graham Little. Graham has supported the club for many many years and even through Illness managed to watch Caldicot Town in action. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Grahams family and especially Graham's Son Peter who has been a regular performer for Caldicot Town's first team. There will be a minutes silence at tonights Reserve team league match in memory of Graham.

CONGRATULATION TO CALDICOT TOWN "A" AFTER THEY REACH THE GILL CUP FINAL WITH A 4-2 WIN OVER TINTERN ABBEY

Weekend Review

13th March 2010

Welsh League Division One

West End 1- 0 Caldicot

Caldicot surprisingly lost 1-0 away as they looked to close the gap on leaders Goytre United. Caldicot had a strong side and have won some impressive games on the road so far this season which is why it was expected that Caldicot would get a result from the Swansea based team. West End however were surely motivated after losing heavily at Caldicot in November and reports from the game told of the Swansea outfit being hungrier than their opponents?  Caldicot face another trip to Swansea where they will face another team that has under performed this season when they face Pontardawe. Tuesday's game away to Ely Rangers has been cancelled due to floodlight issues at the Wenvoe based club.

Welsh League Reserve Division East

Cwmbran Town 2 - 3 Caldicot Town

Caldicot came away from the stadium with all 3 points but made hard work of their win after letting the Crows back into the game. The first half was a dull affair that saw Cwmbran on top with regards to possession. The second half saw a change of formation for Caldicot that saw them dominate large parts of the second period. Alex Watkins who was returning from a 3 game ban scored the first after Ben Miles had won the ball on the edge of the box. The ball fell to Watkins who's shot curled over the keeper to make it 1-0. This goal was followed shortly after by a strike from Dave Jenkins who collected a cross from the industrious James McKeon and beat his marker to slam the ball into the roof of the net to make it 2-0. Alex Watkins capitalized on a through ball and with the keeper to beat slotted it into the far corner. Caldicot were costing and having lost Will McConnell to a first half injury, Caldicot had already made one sub in bringing on U16 player Mark Carter-Selwood. Nick Bright was struggling so young Oliver Jones came off the bench to sit in at the back. Cwmbran then pulled one back after a mis hit shot fortunately found it's way to a striker to tap in and this was followed a few minutes later by another goal where the Caldicot's marking and discipline had vanished. Caldicot changed the formation again to ensure the victory but not without a scare. The Reserves are home Wednesday night against Dinas Powys which Kicks off at 7.30pm.

East Gwent

Caldicot Town "B" 1 - 1 Severn Tunnell "B"

With Steve Bright still away the task of master minding a route to the title fell to James "Pig" Lawrence. After last Sundays Cup Semi Final victory over the tunnelers the visitors were determined to gain revenge and indeed took the lead. Paul Light on loan from the "A" team then jeopardized his chances of winning the Golden Boot award when he sustained an ankle injury which has put the rest of his season in doubt. Lawrence then played a master stroke as he had already used his substitutes so was forced into getting Paul Light to stand in goal with Steve "Bullet Tooth" Hepple moving up front. The Peter Crouch like figure then rose like a Salmon to nod in the equaliser which surprised the player as his goal celebrations suggested. Caldicot now have one league game left which they must win to have any chance of winning the title.

Sunday 14th March

Gill Cup Semi-Final Caldicot Town vs Tintern

The stage was set for the most eagerly anticipated match of the season. The crowds flocked in their masses to Sudbrook CC, hoping to witness another cup classic between these 2 local giants.

Town had several players pull out on the day but welcomed back old favourites, Usain Porter, Rodney Jeremiah, Flick McKeon and Sometimes Williamson.

Both sides started strongly looking for an early breakthrough. It was no surprise to the Town faithful when Tintern took the lead. A slick move by Tintern caught the Town back four flat footed, and the striker guided the ball past the despairing Dave Hayward. Although Town had the lions share of the possession, they could not find a way past the Tintern keeper. Tintern soon went 2-0 up after some more indecisive keeping from Hayward. Old slippery fingers dropped ANOTHER cross after the breeze picked up and tossed him off balance. The ball landed at the strikers feet, and was left with the simple task of slotting into an empty net. In Haywards defence, he did keep Town in the game minutes later with a fine save to his right that he failed to hold.

Towns heads had appeared to drop apart from one man. Step forward the PIG. A corner from the right cleared everyone and was picked up by Rodders. Rodders whipped a cross in from the left and Bundock powered a header against the post. As the disappointment set in to those on the side, Lozza timed his run to perfection and smashed an unstoppable volley past the Tintern keeper. Town went in at the break with their tails up and the score at 2-1.

Bonks replaced Porter at the start of the 2nd half as Town went on the offensive. Early in the half Moreton brought the scores level. After some confusion in the box, Moreton nipped in to fire a low drive past the Tintern Keeper. Tintern were then reduced to 10 men after their defender picked up a second yellow for kicking out at Moreton. The red card could have been avoided if an earlier 20 man + Bonks brawl had been nipped in the bud. Shortly after this, Goal scorer and Town legend Lozza was forced off through injury and was replaced by Mr unpredictable, Hollywood Smith.

Hollywood provided the assist for Towns 3rd goal. His angled 40-yard pass was met by Rodney Jeremiah, who rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net. Big Macca added a 4th later in the half to seal the victory and allow Town to take their foot off the gas. Scott "The Fiddle" McKeon replaced the in-effective Ben Miles before the end but also made little impact. Tony "What position am I?" Jones popped up on the right late on but saw his lob sail wide of the target.

Final score: Caldicot Town 4-2 Tintern

Ratings: Hayward 5, Moreton 9, Jones 9, Lozza 8, Porter 7, L Jeremiah 8, Bundock 8, Bones 7, Chip 8, J Macca, 8, Rodders 9. Subs: Bonks 8, Hollywood 7, S Macca 7.

Weekend Preview:

Caldicot Town first team travel to Swansea on Saturday to face West End who will be seeking revenge for the 7-1 loss at Caldicot back in November. West End's lack of discipline cost them that day as they ended up with 9 men on the field. With Goytre following up their first defeat of the season against Taffs Well with a draw at home to Barry on Wednesday, it will be essential for Caldicot to pick up another 3 points on the road to keep up the pressure in the pursuit of the title.

Caldicot Reserves are also on the road this coming weekend with a visit to Cwmbran stadium in the offing. The Reserves conceded a last minute goal at Ely Rangers last week having been 2-1 down after Rob Baileys dismissal. Caldicot fought back valiantly and pulled a penalty back before going on to lose. If the title is to be won the Reserves cannot realistically afford to lose another game as Cwmbran's closest rivals, Celtic sit second 6 points adrift but with 6 games in hand.

Caldicot "A" face Tintern Abbey again a week after losing to them by a 3-0 scoreline a week earlier. This time it is for a place in the Gill Cup final. This Semi Final is to be held at Sudbrook CC on Sunday 14th assuming their pitch will be playable? Manager Frank Rowberry who is currently abroad will be replaced by Veteran player Adrian Porter.

Caldicot "B" play host to Severn Tunnel a week after beating them 2-0 the week before which secured a final appearance in Steve Brights debut season. Steve who like Frank Rowberry is currently out of country at present due to work commitments and his team know they need to win these last two games and hope rivals Blackrock Rovers slip up along the way if they stand any chance of winning the league.

Good Luck to all teams

Weekend Review

Saturday 27th February

Welsh League Division One

Bryntirion 0 v 1 Caldicot Town

Caldicot Town first team kept up the pressure on table topping Goytre with an away victory at Bryntirion. This result is testament to the belief in this current side who's mindset is totally focused on winning every game and actually believing before each game that they will. Confidence breeds confidence and at this time Caldicot have it in abundance. Gareth Cullimore made a scoring return to the team but was glad of some fortune as Cullimore cross came shot found the far corner as the game progressed in the second half. Bryntirion are a good side and will probably feel hard done by after conceding such a goal. Caldicot will use this result as a barometer to mark the progression made so far this season and with Taffs Well inflicting Goytre's first defeat of the season the race for the title is not a forgone conclusion yet!

Welsh League Reserve Division East

Ely Rangers 3 v 2 Caldicot Town

Caldicot Reserves lost on the road in a tight but thrilling game at Wenvoe. Caldicot took an early lead through Dave Jenkins but conceded on the stroke of half time. The Referee was having an impact on the game and was flashing yellow cards around like confetti and after overruling a throw in decision Ely forced a corner which they scored from to the annoyance of the Caldicot management and players especially Rob Bailey who received a second yellow for dissent however this was not in the form of swearing (He's to nice for that!). Down to 10 men but Caldicot started playing the better football as the lined up 3-5-1 and forced a penalty as young Will McConnell was impeded just inside the area and although he tried to stay on his feet he eventually fell and to the Referee's credit he awarded the penalty which was dispatched by Wayne Morley. With time running out Caldicot looked the more likely to score and with a better selection of through balls this may have happened. Ely are a good side and they play good football and they forced a last ditch corner which was taken quickly. This caught out Caldicot and when the ball was played in the ball just beat Dave Jenkins and was glanced in to the far corner to steal the victory. A cracking game slightly spoiled by an over zealous ref but where would we be without them! Well done Ely

East Gwent -

Caldicot Town "A" 0 v 3 Tintern Abbey

The Abbey left Jubilee way with not only 3 points but the hope that was of Caldicot's title dreams. With Big Frank away on an international scouting mission somewhere in South America, normal management duties were left to the injured Adrian Porter but it was to be an unhappy start for him. Caldicot face the Abbey again next Sunday in a cup semi-final and will be looking to avenge this defeat.

Sunday 7th March "Fishwick" Cup Semi Final (played at Rogiet)

Caldicot Town "B" 2 v 0 Severn Tunnel Junction "B"

With the original pitch at Sudbrook deemed unplayable, both sides agreed to play at Rogiet. A brave decision by Steve "Jose" Bright who either thought that playing in front of their own supporters would heap to much pressure on the Tunnelers or was it just that they couldn't be bothered to put the nets up back at Caldicot? I'm guessing the latter. Still, on a crystal clear day which was reminiscent of Pearl Harbor due to there being a nasty nip in the air the game got under way on a surface the cows were scared to walk on. This was one pitch you could blame the bobble on and to think those overpaid pre Madonnas of the premiere league moan about the Wembley surface well they should come and see grass routes at it's worse!

Super Son Nick Bright who recently shrugged off a career threatening knee injury the other week was on target for Caldicot and this was followed up by Shane "Rodney Puss" Jeremiah Jnr III to make it 2-0. The second half was a dull affair but there were glimpses of talent for the on watching 1st and 2nd team managers as young John McGinty and Simon Hathaway looked more than capable of performing at a higher level. So the League and cup double is still on for Jose Bright and with a visit to the hallowed Jubilee way turf in the bag a possible night of glory awaits

Chepstow Town "B" beat Undy Athletic "B" in the other semi-final to set up a mouth watering game at Jubilee Way against Caldicot Town "B" on Friday 16th April Ko 6.15pm

Caldicot Town 3 v 1 Newport Civil Service

Caldicot Reserves away fixture at Civil was reversed due to there waterlogged pitch and with a back log of games to play the team from Newport agreed to the switch of venue. Caldicot had destroyed the visitors earlier in the season winning 9-0 but this time out Civil were in a determined mood. Caldicot were boosted in having a four first team players who were without a game and was an ideal chance for watching first team managers, Wetter and Pritchard to cast an eye over recent signing from Caerleon Chris Pearce. He was joined by Steve Edwards who missed last weeks win against Ton Pentre through work and Mark Williams and Ben Roberts who have been making there comeback from recent injuries.

The Pitch at Jubilee Way was still itself quite heavy and it seemed to even the game out with there not being much to shout about during the opening part of the game. Caldicot did open the scoring with a well worked goal that was superbly dispatched by Steve Edwards to put the home side in the lead. Civil battled on and looked dangerous at time as Caldicot battled against the five man midfield Civil had deployed. Rob Bailey came close with a couple of efforts and will be missed as he announced he is going to Australia for a few months but with the crop of youngsters waiting in the wings I'm confident a replacement will be found. Into the second half and Caldicot were looking for an early goal to kill off any ideas that Civil may have had about getting back into the match. It took some time in coming but when it did Chris Pearce smashed the ball past the Civil keeper leaving him with no chance as Caldicot went 2-0 up.

John Reed who was playing at right back had an improved second half and had a bitter sweet moment after 65 minutes as he scored Caldicot's third of the game but was immediately substituted in what was a double substitution as he along with Chris Pearce made way for Simon Crook and James McKeon who moved up front along side Williams. There were no further goals from Caldicot but the lively Mckeon could have added a brace but it was instead Civil who pulled a goal back with a shot that seemed a slice that floated over everyone and in to the top corner to make the final score 3-1 to Caldicot.

East Gwent -

Caldicot Town "B" 3 v 0 Chepstow Town "B"

Steve Bright men scored an important victory in the race for league and cup glory with the battle hotting up it was new boy Nathan Murphy who opened his Caldicot account with a brace with another for Captain committed Mark "The Guvnor" O'Hara. Caldicot's next game is against Severn Tunnel in the "Fishwick Cup" Semi-final which will be played over Sudbrook CC. Kickoff will be 2pm

Welsh League Division One

Caldicot Town 3 v 1 Ton Pentre

Caldicot Town bounced back in superb fashion after last weeks defeat at home against Taffs Well. Ton had climbed back up he table after a series of good results although they have played more games than Caldicot. Ton started well and took an early lead which must have had most of the Caldicot management and supporters thinking that another bad day was on the cards. Captain Gareth Heywood had an immense game and rattled into his tackles which seemed to drag the whole team with him and Caldicot got back into the game and eventually win after goals came from a Jason Thorn brace and a Mark Williams goal. Caldicot were without striking talisman Gareth Cullimore who had been involved in a minor road accident during the week. All at the club wish him a speedy recovery. Caldicot are without a fixture next Saturday and face Bryntirion away on the 6th March.

Welsh League Reserve Division East

Caldicot Town 2 v 0 Risca United

Caldicot Reserves gained revenge for last weeks loss away at Risca by beating their visitors 2-0. Caldicot were playing with 3 Under 16 players in the side and they all performed well in what was a physical battle against a determined Risca side. Caldicot took the lead after 10 minutes after good work down the right saw Reed cross into the box which beat James McKeon but was meant on the half volley by Left wing Rob Bailey. His shot looped up over the keeper and to many peoples surprise into the net where it had looked like the ball had gone over the bar. Risca stepped up the pressure and Caldicot looked vulnerable at set pieces and after 30 minutes had lost Captain, Leighton Burrows who was struggling with Injury. Lewis Cutajar moved into defence with Tom Moore dropping into midfield and young Jamie Watts moved up front. With minutes to go before halftime, Nick Bright picked up a knee injury and had to come off. Caldicot now set up with a 3-5-2 formation that matched Risca's and went in 1-0 at the break. The second half started and Risca were physical and applied pressure on Caldicot who now had U16 Mark Carter-Selwood playing left wingback and U16 Ryan Guscott playing right wingback. To a man (or boy) the Caldicot side played counter attack football that brought a second goal after good wok through Ben "Fabregas" Miles who played in Rob Bailey for his second of the game. Risca were deflated and frustrated which showed in the way they went into tackles but Caldicot were not to be denied

East Gwent -

Caldicot Town "A" 11 v 2 Wyesham "A"

Caldicot Town "A" beat East Gwent second division strugglers Wyesham by an 11 - 2 scoreline. Caldicot started the game with 10 men as Big Frank took the gamble of waiting for superstar striker Paul Light to turn up. Rob Keats had to wait on the bench but to everyone's surprise Wyesham opened the scoring and Big Frank was forced into putting on Dynamite Keats who was searching for his 5th goal of the season. Caldicot soon eased any worries as the goals started to flow and with Shane Jeremiah returning from injury he managed to secure another Hatrick for the season along side Paul Light and Dave "Hollywood" Smith. Adrian Porter and Lee Jeremiah were also on target. Dave Haywards career was left in tatters after the match after he conceeded 2 goals against East Gwents least prolific strikeforce. In an aftermatch interview with Mon TV Hayward blamed off the field problems for his dip in form, and threatened to hand up his gloves for good!!

Caldicot Town "B" 0 v 2 Severn Tunnel "B"

Steve Bright men crashed to a surprise defeat at the hands of Severn Tunnel. In a hard fought match Caldicot dominated and had many chance throughout the game but failed to convert any chances. Caldicot new it was not to be when Mark O'Hara saw his penalty saved. Town draughted in local legend James "commited to the cause" Lawrence for this must win game. Terry Boston was also a surprise inclusion to the squad after he made the long journey back from his relationship saving trip to the Maldives. Despite dominating the match, Town went in at the break 2-0 down. An early mistake by Steve "Waifer legs" Hepple gifted Severn Tunnel an early lead, after his clearance fell to the strikers feet. Hepple could only stand and watch as the resulting shot sailed over his flapping arms and into the top corner. Hepple then gave away a dubious penalty which was dispached by ex-Town favourite Barrie "strong in the tackle" Lapham. Town could not find the breakthrough in the second half either, and were left to reflect on missed chances at the final whistle.

Ratings: Hepple 5, Boston 8, Lozza 8, Williams 7, Pritchard 7, Lynch 6, McGinty 9, O'Hara 5, McConnell 7, Hathway 7, Antell 8.

Weekend Review

Saturday 30th January

Welsh League Division One

Caldicot Town 0 v 3 Taffs Well

Caldicot Town were second best at home against a very youthful athletic side. Taffs Well had already beaten Caldicot away and it was probably thought of at the time as a bad result but in all fairness Taffs Well have been deserved of victory on both occasions. Caldicot remain second on goal difference with Afan Lido hot in pursuit but Caldicot have a superior goal difference. Caldicot face an away trip at Ton Pentre and will be keen to complete the double over a side that are well placed in the league but having played more games.

Welsh League Reserve Division East

Caldicot Town 1 v 3 Risca United

Caldicot Reserves came up against a Risca side that may have benefited from their first team not playing but still only have themselves to blame for slipping up against a side that has struggled to gain points so far this season. Caldicot were without influential captain Neil Windsor and have recently lost Luke Harris and Joe Martin to other clubs and had Alex Watkins suspended last week for a red card offence but still have enough quality to win a game like yesterday's. Wayne Morley had an interesting game yesterday as he scored and missed a penalty before scoring an own goal. Risca started the brighter and scored first before Morley's equaliser. Into the second half Risca again started the stronger before Caldicot got into their stride but with Morley's own goal and a late opportunist strike Risca were the victors on the day. Caldicot play host to Risca next weekend at Jubilee Way so will I'm sure be looking to reverse Saturday's result

East Gwent -

Caldicot Town "A" 3 v 4 Chepstow Town "A"

Caldicot Town "A" lost a tight game at the hands of rivals Chepstow "A" by the odd goal in 7. Caldicot's scorers were Scott McKeon, Paul Light and up and coming star Ryan Guscott. Town dominated early proceedings, but could not find the killer touch. Scott "JSA" McKeon was rampant down the right and looked like causing some damage to the Chepstow rear guard. Despite never really getting into the match it was Chepstow who took the lead. A corner was whipped in from the left, and Dave "Jigsaw" Hayward decided to wave to his son on the sideline rather than claim the cross. The striker was left with a free header at the back post that was eventually turned in by Macca. Minutes later Hayward was picking the ball out of the net again. More indecisive keeping from Wayward gifted Chepstow a 2nd. His clearance barely cleared the six yard box and the striker smashed in a low drive to make it 2-0.

Town picked themselves up for the second half and threw everything at Chepstow. Lozza almost got Town back in the game with what has been described as "The Perfect Header".. From 18 yards out, he found the kind of power that is used to launch rockets to guide a header towards the top corner. Somehow, the athletic, agile keeper tipped the ball over the bar for a corner. Town eventually grabbed a deserved goal through Macca, after some fancy footwork down the left by David "Thatchers" Smith. Town had trown Smith & Ryan "Quiddich" Guscott on moments before the goal, which proved to be a stroke of genius by big Frank. Guscott then grabbed himself a goal after a neat interchange between Lozza and Macca. Town were back in it at 2-2 with about 10 minutes to play. Within minutes, Town were chasing the game again. A defensive slip by Tom "Ryan Guscott" Moore allowed the Chepstow striker to lash a low drive near post past the despairing Hayward. Chepstow then grabbed another to make it 4-2. Hayward flapped like saloon doors in a huricane, and allowed the striker a free header at the near post. Paul Light rounded the keeper and grabbed a cheeky consolation goal to make it 4-3, but it proved too little too late for Town.

Ratings: Wayward 3, Moreton 7, Lozza 8, Porter 7, Jones 8, Jeremiah 6, Moore 7, Bundock 7, Macca 9, Light 8, Bonks 6. Subs: Hollywood 7, Guscott 8, Beresford (Not Used).

Caldicot Town "B" 1 v 1 Chepstow Town "B"

Steve Brights men came out of this game with a well earnt point to keep them on target for the title. Mark O'Hara was on target for Caldicot.

Welsh League Reserve Division East

Dinas Powys 1 v 1 Caldicot Town

Caldicot Town Reserves followed in the first teams path and travelled to the Murch to play Dinas Powys Reserves but could only manage a draw. In respects of the scoreline it was a fair result as both teams created but squandered golden opportunities to take all the points. The first half was a tight affair but Dinas took the lead after sloppy defending at a freekick awarded to the home side just minutes before the half time interval. The ball was played into the box and not cleared effectively and a Dinas player was on hand to tap in the first goal of the game. Dinas could have gone in two up after hesitant defending between Caldicot's keeper and left back. Like most teams in this division, Caldicot had not played since the 19th December and looked like they hadn't either. General play was good but the final pass was proving elusive. Mark Williams on his return from injury was played in down the right flank and he calmly waited for the chance to tuck his shot passed the keeper and defender on the line to make it one all. Williams then wasted a golden chance when Peter Little's cross from the left found Williams with a free header from six yards that he somehow headed over. Caldicot were awarded a nailed on penalty after Morley was taken out in the home sides box. Returning from injury, Reserve team Captain Neil Windsor stepped up to take the spot kick but only found the up right which rebounded to Alex Watkins who's side footed effort went just wide of the post Windsor had hit. Dinas fought back and created a couple of clear chances as well that on another day would have found the net. So all in all both teams will look back and reflect on missed opportunities but will probably except a point.

East Gwent -

Caldicot Town "A" 3 v 0 Caldicot Castle "A"

Big Franks mean machine marched on winning 3-0 at home over Caldicot Castle. Scorers were Paul Light with a brace and veteran campaigner Anthony Jones. Town were odds on to stick another cricket score on rock bottom Caldicot Castle. Town had a mix & match team out which meant a rare starting place for former fans favourite David "beats 1, beats2" Smith. Town dominated early proceedings and quickly went one nil up. After a corner was half cleared, James "Jack in the box" Lawrence leapt highest to nod the ball down for Lighty, who smashed a volley into the top corner. Lozza picked up a career breaking injury in the proccess as he was hacked down by his former friend Macca. Matthew "Lead Foot" Williamson notched up a record 202 shots off target in the first half, which left Town going in at the break only 1-0 up.

The second half was as 1-sided as the first as Town peppered the Castle goal. Veteran Castle midfielders Andy "Calm Down" Joel & Rik "the Shimmy" Clayton were unable to contain the pacey Town midfielders. Luckily for Castle they had an ace up their sleeve in the form of Rubbish Jamie. His early first half booking meant that he was too scared to put a tackle in on Tony "Carlos" Jones, who ran from the edge of his own box before lobbing the keeper from 30 yards. Moments later, Paul "Right Said Fred" Light hit a Mark Hughes style scissor kick into the roof of the net to make it 3-0. Town could have scored again after this when substitute Ray "1 for the road" Jeremiah ghosted in at the back post to head the ball from below sea level straight at the keeper. Castle posed little threat until late on, when Dave "No mates on the pitch" Hayward fluffed his clearance and was forced to hack down former brother in-law Rik Clayton from behind. Hayward escaped with a booking, as Adrian "Pace to burn" Porter got goal side to ensure Hayward was not the last man.

Final Score: Caldicot 3 - 0 Caslte.

Ratings: Hayward 4, Moreton 7, Lozza 7, Porter 7, Jones 8, Macca 7, Moore 7, L Jeremiah 7, Hollywood 7 (R Jeremiah 7), Bonks 4, Lighty 8.

Blackrock Rovers 2 v 1 Caldicot Town "B"

Steve Brights men crashed to a 2-1 defeat at the hand of title rivals Blackrock Rovers. Winning today would have given the new Jose Murinho one hand on the title but Paul Lovells scrappers scuppered those plans for another day. The Rock took the lead but were eventually pegged back once Jose Bright had realised that Mitchell Slape plays better up front than he does at RIGHT BACK?????? Slape son of millionaire chairman Martin Slape showed his critics what he could do as he bagged an equaliser. With O'hara and Sharratt who was promoted from the first team for the day looked solid in the middle but to their credit the Rock kicked the S**T out of them to dominate proceedings and open up the title race once again

Late "B" team news came in at 5pm on Saturday that Eddie 5 bellies Edwards was seen wondering around Caldicot with Julian Harris drinking some strange cider bad mouthing Jose Bright for his team selection. He was later spotted in the "New Garden" ordering a meal for four....for one!

Welsh League

Dinas Powys 0 v 3 Caldicot Town

Caldicot Town put in a solid display to overcome Dinas Powys away from home by a 3-0 scoreline. The game was disrupted several times during the first half due to dog feces needing to be removed but play continued on a slightly sticky pitch which held up well after recent rain. Dinas had a good effort saved by Smallcombe in the Caldicot goal after a long kick downfield was not dealt with and a goalbound shot was smashed towards the top corner before Smallcombe intervened. Just before the break Caldicot scored their first of the day after Thorn was fouled out on the right hand side and the resulting freekick was played in where the ball was played back across the 6 yard line and turned in by Caldicot Captain Gareth Heywood for his first goal of the season. After the break Dinas came out in determined fashion but it would be Caldicot who would score the next crucial goal. After good pressure Caldicot forced a corner which was swung over by Lloyd but missed everyone except Cullimore who swooped down low to nod in the second. Dominic Connor and Shane Jeremiah are forging a good understanding down the left and Connor should have added to the 6 goals he has scored so far this season but lobbed the ball when played through over the keeper but past the far post. Cullimore was on target again later on in the game to put Caldicot in complete command and consolidate second place in the league after Aberaman lost for the second time in a week to table topping Goytre United.

East Gwent -

Caldicot Town "A" v Rockfield Rovers "A" finished 1-0.

Big Franks boys came through in a tight encounter against Rockfield Rovers beating them by a solitary Paul Light goal. Town started with the oldest back four on record, with an average age of 44. Terry Boston, Porter, Lozza & Tony lined up with Hayward bringing up the rear. On a boggy pitch Town still stroked the ball round as if they were playing on a bowling green, but could not find the back of the net. Lee Moreton was relishing his new role on the right wing, and was tormenting the Rockfield back four. Despite all their pressure, it never looked like Town would break the deadlock. Rockfield saw several chances go begging in the first half, as they could not find a way past the in-form Dave Hayward. Mid-way through the first half Hayward was beaten, but veteran defender Tony Jones had positioned himself on the line to clear with his head. Minutes later, Lozza missed a golden chance to make it 1-0 but his header was acrobatically saved by the Rockfield keeper. The sides went in at the break with the scores 0-0.

The second half was much the same as the first, with Mr Duracell Tom Moore patrolling the midfield. More chances went begging, and Towns set pices had quite literally "gone to pieces". With the game seemingly heading for a draw Rockfield broke free down the left. The ball fell to the strikers feet on the edge of the box, and he let a rasping drive go towards the far post. As the striker turned to celebrate, Hayward flung himself to his left and palmed the ball round the post. The crowd had just witnessed one of the greatest saves in East Gwent history to keep Town in the game. With 15 minutes left on the clock Frank introduced Mr Controversial Ray Jeremiah, which would turn out to be a master stroke. Ray put in a crunching challenge and the ball fell to Lighty. In the blink of an eye Lighty unleashed a shot that flew into the bottom corner. Town had finally broken the deadlock to take some pressure off. Hollywood Smith had also come off the bench with a point to prove. He went on a spell-binding run, beating 4 or 5 Rockfield players. With only the keeper to beat, he lashed the ball out for a throw-in with his right hoof. After a few late scares, and more world class saves from Hayward, Town finally ran out 1-0 winners.

Ratings: Hayward 5, Boston 7, Porter 7, Lozza 7, Jones 7, L Jeremiah 7, Moore 8, Bonks 6, Moreton 7, Light 7, Macca 7. Subs: R Jeremiah 7, Beresford 6, Hollywood 7.

Welsh League

Caldicot Town overcame a very strong Cambrian side to move second in the Welsh League Division One table. First half goals from Jason Thorn and Gareth Cullimore paved the way for a massive 3 points for Caldicot before a late strike from Dominic Connor sealed the victory.

The first half saw the visitors on top for most of the half with Caldicot's defence just managing to keep  Cambrian at bay but with minutes of the half remaining good work down Caldicot's left saw man of the match Shane Jeremiah play a one two with Dominic Connor who squared for Jason Thorn to open the scoring. Into injury time and to most people surprise Caldicot extended their lead through Cullimore to give Caldicot a 2-0 half time lead. The second half started in pouring rain on a pitch that was very heavy but void of snow thanks to supporters who cleared what was remaining away on Friday.Caldicot did not have to chase the game and allowed Cambrian to have most of the half's possession but Cambrian were unable to capitalise on chances created. With time ticking away a free kick was won by Thorn who took it quickly to Dominic Connor who slid the ball into the net with just the keeper to beat to take all the points. A much deserved victory which on balance you could argue Cambrian deserved something but in this game Caldicot took the chance they created.

East Gwent -

Caldicot Town "A" v Sudbrook "A" finished 4-1.

Town eased to victory over a poor Sudbrook side. Although Town were not at their best, they were always in control in a 1-sided affair. Town were unable to find a breakthrough in the first half, and went in at the break 0-0. Stand-in keeper James Lawrence made a string of world class saves to ensure Sudbrook didn't take an undeserved lead. Former fans favourite James McKeon struggled to find the form that had visiting scouts rubbing their hands last season.

Early second half goals from Paul Light & Tom Moore gave Town a comfortable lead, but unfortunatley Town sat back. James Lawrence was left floundering as Jamie Woodfield scored a wonder goal for the visitors. Adrian Porter scored a penalty & Matthew Williamson bagged a screamer of a goal with his left peg to ensure Town ran out deserved winners.

James Lawrence was later voted Man of the match by the Town faithful.

Club News.....

It is with sadness that Caldicot Town announces the passing of Committee Member Ken Smith after a prolonged illness. Ken served with passion as a member of the committee and was always keen to help out on when the first team played a home games even if he was feeling under the weather. Ken also performed the service as the clubs LVA representative. The Committee and all other playing staff and club members would like to express there condolences to Ken's immediate family

Welsh League

Caldicot Town first team match at Ely Rangers was cancelled due to the frost.

Caldicot Town Reserves played host to visiting Ely Rangers Reserved in what turned out to be one of only 3 Welsh League games played on a frosty Christmas weekend. The game ended 2-2 and was an entertaining game which is testament to both teams under the circumstances where the ground was hard and uneven. Ely Rangers were on the back foot for the first 10 minutes but would take the lead against the run of play after a high curling left foot cross was hit towards the back post area where the attacking Ely Rangers player gambled to hit a low volley past a stunned Caldicot defence. Worse was to follow for the home side when a set piece was taken quickly which caught out Caldicot and a close range shot found the net after the ensuing goal mouth scramble. To the teams credit, Caldicot rolled their sleeves up and dug deep to pull the game level going into the break. Ely found themselves defending as Wayne Morley pulled the strings along with midfielder Ben Miles to create several chances. Caldicot scored their first goal via the penalty spot after a goalbound effort hit a defender's arm leaving the ref no choice with his decision. With regular penalty taker Neil Windsor missing through injury, Wayne Morley stepped up and saw his effort saved but luckily rebounded straight back to him but this time he made no mistake to make it 2-1. Caldicot made it 2-2 after winning a freekick on the edge of the Ely Rangers box and John Reed hammered the ball into the bottom corner which again was well saved by the keeper but Dave Jenkins followed in to tap in the rebound. After the break Caldicot were in determined mood and found themselves with several good chances which unfortunately they could not take. Ben Miles had a left foot effort saved after a headed down corner and Morley again forced the keeper into another fine save. Ely looked content with a draw and played on the counter attack but the Caldicot defence was well organised leaving Nick Hardy in goal with little to do. Speaking of little, Caldicot's own Peter Little came closest of all to sealing the win when he smashed a cracking freekick against the under side of the bar which nearly went in off the keeper. Alas it wasn't to be for Caldicot and Ely dug deep to gain a well earnt point. Caldicot's next game is not until January 9th where they play home against Newport YMCA.

Welsh League

Caldicot Town travel to Ely Rangers on Saturday looking to maintain the form they have shown so far this season. Caldicot defeated Ely Rangers earlier on in the season and like last week against Caerleon will be hoping to complete a league double. Jacob Guy, Richard Sharratt and Andrew Wenzel are on the long term injury list and Wayne Morley is also a doubt for tomorrows game. But it is testament to the strength in depth of the Caldicot squad as the gaps have been filled successfully by veteran midfielder Will Vers, Ben Roberts and Shane Jeremiah who have been regular reserve team players so far this season. Ely are currently placed near the bottom of the table but there is never an easy game in this league so the management team will be keen for hot shots, Gareth Cullimore & Jason Thorn to continue their scoring run.

Caldicot Reserves face Ely Rangers Reserves at Jubilee way and I'm sure they will provide a sterner test than Newport Civil Service did last weekend where Caldicot ran out 9-0 winners. Caldicot are looking to welcome back into the team Leighton Burrows and Kojo Ofori and have retained the services of Peter Little who impressed in last weeks game. Dave Jenkins returned last week from long term injury but Captain Neil Windsor looks set to miss more games as he recovers from a knee ligament injury.

East Gwent

Caldicot "A" face a tough trip to Rockfield Rovers on Saturday but will have players available from the "B" side who are not in action this weekend.

Welsh League

Caldicot continued their good season and completed the double over fellow Gwent rivals Caerleon which see's them rooted to the bottom of the Welsh League division one table. The deadly duo of Cullimore and Thorn struck with a goal each and was complemented by another goal from David Lloyd to seal the victory. Caldicot held a 1-0 lead at halftime but Caerleon equalised via a penalty and looked shaky for a spell which Caerleon failed to capitilise on before Caldicot stretched their lead. Caldicot consolidate 3rd place with Aberaman winning but Barry dropped 2 points at home to Dinas Powys after they drew 1-1. Caldicot face another away game next week when they play Ely Rangers where they will hope to seal another league double.

Caldicot Reserves were in rampant mood when they faced league newcomers Newport Civil Service at Jubilee Way in this league encounter. Caldicot went into the break 5-0 up and went on to add another 4 goals after the break. Alex Watkins was Caldicot's man of the match after scoring 4 well taken goals which were added to by Dave Jenkins who opened the flood gates. Peter Little scored a goal and  ran riot down the left flank for most of the game and was backed up well by left back Scott Howells. Simon Crook also got on the score sheet and with Ben "Fabregas" Miles pulling the strings in the midfield and with the dangerous crossing ability of John Reed down the right there was always going to be plenty of Caldicot goals. Rob Bailey scored and could have helped himself to more before being replaced by Joe Martin who also scored on his return to the reserve team. A good performance considering the break between today and the last outing where Caldicot crashed out of the cup. Ely Rangers are next up for Caldicot at home and will I'm sure prove tougher opponents. Caldicot Move back above Caerleon to the top of the Reserve division East and will look to sustain that lead moving into the Christmas break.

East Gwent

Caldicot "B" were in action against Wyesham "B" and came out on top winning 8-0. Simon Hathaway collected another hatrick for the season and a brace from the prolific Mark O'Hara got Caldicot on there way and further goals were added from Mitchell Slape, Scott McKeon and late sub Paul Light who made sure he stayed top of the Goal scoring chart in scoring his 17th goal of the season. Caldicot "B" under the leadership of a man likened to that of Jose Murinho for his tactical nounce sit top of the East Gwent division three table having won 12 out of 14 games to date and losing just one and drawing one in what has been to date a succesful season. Keep up the good work Brighty and Co.

Saturday 5th December

Welsh League

Well Caldicot had a good go at becoming the first team this season to beat Goytre United but came up just short with a matter of finishing being the difference. Goytre deserved their win and had the edge in quality and general know how around the pitch but Caldicot far from disgraced themselves. Goytre went ahead on 25 minutes but Caldicot could have taken the lead before then after a good cross from Vers was headed straight at the Goytre keeper from 6 yards by Dominic Connor. Just before half time Caldicot were awarded a penalty after a Goytre defender handled in the box. David Lloyd dispatched the spot kick to take the homeside level at 1-1 into the half time break.

Goytre came out of the blocks quickly at the start of the second half and established a lead once more before most supporters had even finished off their half time refreshments. This was a blow for the homeside who had to start again but showed glimpses that they were more than capable of getting something from this game. Goytre dominated large spells of the half but Caldicot looked a threat on the counter attack. One such occasion will haunt Caldicot's Wayne Morley for sure after good play down the right hand side saw the ball squirm its way across the six yard line into the path of Morley who somehow shot over when it looked easier to score.

Caldicot searched for an equaliser but it would be Goytre who would add another with around 10 minutes remaining. The unfortunate Ben Roberts could not get enough purchase on a back header to Smallcombe who had an excellent game in the Caldicot goal but could do nothing to prevent the killer goal for the visitors.

Lots of positives to take out of the game for all those associated with Caldicot as this team year on year progresses. A large percentage of this team has grown up and progressed as a group through the different leagues of the Welsh League and can walk away from playing a quality side who will in my mind win this league again and think to themselves that they were in this game for large parts and competed well in all areas. Goytre have the experience to win games and also the quality but why do the players of this team continue to play at this level year on year for a team that does not seem interested in promotion to the Welsh Premiere League?

East Gwent

Caldicot B travelled the short distance to play Chepstow Athletic and ran out winners. Joe Martin with a brace and further goals from Dan Lynch and Mighty Mouse, Rob Keats sealed the win that SURELY see Steve Bright crowned manager of the month for division three?

Weekend Review

Saturday 5th December

Ahh yes it's that most wonderful time of the year when there is goodwill all around.....except this Saturday that is when Caldicot Town 1st team face there stiffest challenge of the season to date when they entertain table topping Goytre United. It's been a while since Caldicot had any success of the Port Talbot club but this season has shown the Caldicot Supporters that the team assembled together at the moment by the management duo of Wetter & Pritchard is made of sterner stuff. On top of this resolve comes a glut of goals scored mainly by the impressive Jason Thorn and current top goal scorer Gareth Cullimore who have netted an impressive 29 goals out of 40 scored so far this season!

Goytre however have seen it all before and have an annoying knack of winning and grinding out a result. They will prove a very tough nut to crack but if the forwards can take the chances on offer (and that might not be many) and the midfield lads continue to assist in creating the chances then there is always the hope that Goytre can be beaten. A special mention at this point for the lads at the back who are captained by Gareth Heywood. Although these lads do not often get the glory of scoring the goals, these lads form the backbone of this team and should be gratefully appreciated by all.

On the injury front may I take this opportunity to wish a speedy recovery to these players such as Andrew Wenzel, Jacob Guy and Neil Windsor (and anyone else I may have missed)

No game for the Reserves again but they do have 2 home games to finish off the year when they first face Newport Civil Service who have recently signed Tyrone Tucker-Dixon to play for there first team and then on the 19th Caldicot Reserves face Ely Ranger. The Reserves currently lie 2nd in the table and at this stage there is no clear favorite to win it!

Weekend Roundup

Saturday 28th November 2009

Caldicot Town first team were the only team in the club in action this weekend as the persistent rain would ensure that league fixtures all over gwent were affected.

Caldicot travelled to Bettws to play a league fixture in gloomy conditions but considering the rain fall of late the Bettws pitch although slightly heavy was fairing well. Caldicot were in confident mood having handed out a heavy defeat to West End the previous week and knew they were playing a Bettws team that were not the force they were from last season where they finished a creditable 4th. Caldicot welcomed back James Smallcombe in goal and the back four lined up minus Wenzel with Dan Rowberry at right back, Ben Roberts, Captain Gareth Heywood at centre halves and Shane Jeremiah at left back. The midfield system of three consisted of Wayne Morley, Will Vers and David Lloyd and the forward three of Mark Williams, Gareth Cullimore and Jason Thorn made up the starting eleven.

Caldicot played down the slope in the first half and started brightly with Williams linking up well with Cullimore to create the first chance which was not taken. Thorn was causing the home side problems down there right hand side but slowly gained a foothold in the match and looked dangerous at set pieces. Although Caldicot started well it was the home side that took the lead after a break down the right saw a deflection off Rowberry into the path of a Bettws player who slotted home to make it 1-0 after 20 minutes of play. Caldicot although disappointed to concede got back in the groove and equalised somewhat fortuitously after Cullimore received the ball on the edge of the area turned and hit a shot that some how squeezed through the goal keepers legs to make it 1-1. Rowberry picked up a foot injury and was replaced by Andrew Edwards as the scores stayed the same for the rest of the half.

The second half got under way with Bettws playing with the slope and it was they who got on top of the game early in the half forcing Caldicot on the back foot. The back four were holding firm though and through the creativeness of Lloyd and Morley who played more like the Caldicot faithful know he can play there were always going to be chances for Thorn and Cullimore. That said it was the home side who would retake the lead after they forced a corner. A constant weakness for Caldicot is probably defending set pieces due to the lack of height. The ball was swung in right underneath Smallcombes crossbar and the keeper looked like he was bundled into the net with the ball but the goal stood. Was this going to be Bettws day? Jeremiah picked up a caution for winning a clean tackle which the assistant ref flagged up as using excessive force!

Bettws were on top and probably should have added another in the time they remained on top but once Caldicot regained there composure they clawed themselves back into the game. Dominic Connor came on and took up a position on the left which saw Thorn move to the right and that paid massive dividends as Thorn would drag Caldicot bag in the game with a stunning goal. Stuck out wide Thorn cut in beating his marker before unleashing a curling shot into the top left corner. This lifted Caldicot and proved to be the turning point as Caldicot smelt victory. Dominic Connor was creating and causing the home defence concern and it would be Connor who would snatch the points after Cullimore received the ball and evaded two challenges before seeing his shot saved but deflected into the path of Thorn who headed his effort against the post which luckily bounced back into the path of Connor to tap in. Bettws piled forward and Caldicot looked slightly nervous having not come away from Bettws with the chance of 3 points before but they held firm to win the game.

Well done to all the players and to the lads who have come in for injured regulars who have shown the management that there is strength in depth within the club. Caldicot face a stern test of there credentials next week when they take on table toppers Goytre United.......If it ever stops raining that is!

Weekend Roundup

22 November 2009

Welsh League:

Caldicot 1st team continued there good season with an impressive win over the visitors from Swansea. West End however finished with 9 men after two dismissals, the first was for a headbutt which was seen by the referee and the second was for comments made to one of the assistants. Disgraceful scenes followed the first incident with the West End player refusing to leave the field after being shown the red card with the player making further attempts to attack the Caldicot player. Back to the football and it was Thorn who opened the scoring after hitting the post earlier on. West End were ragged and could have conceded further but to there credit they equalised with a superb goal after a long diagonal ball was played from right to left and the number 10 side footed a volley from outside the box over stand in keeper Nick Hardy to make it 1-1. Gareth Cullimore put Caldicot back in front after some good pressure was applied from the visitors. At the break Caldicot lead and with blustery rainy conditions the second half got underway with a strong breeze behind the home side. At this stage of the game West End were very much in it that was until a couple of there players let themselves and there team mates down with there behavior. Caldicot were able to capitalize and further goals were added when Mark Williams rounded the keeper before slotting home and Cullimore would eventually score his hatrick but could have had many more. Substitutes were made on both sides but it would be Caldicot who would inflict more misery on the visitors in using the advantage of having two more men on the field. The impressive Shane Jeremiah claimed a goal and Dominic Connor also found the net to wrap up a 7-1 win.

East Gwent

Both Caldicot Town "A" & "B" had tough Ben cup 1st round draws and both teams went out. The "A" team played home against rivals Chepstow Town and came unstuck going 2-0 down after 2 minutes of play. In miserable conditions Caldicot were 5-2 down at half time and ended up losing 8-4. Caldicot goals were courtesy of Paul Light 2, John Reed 1, and Simon Crook.

Caldicot "B" were drawn away at Undy "A" from the league above but put in a spirited performance before eventually going down 4-3 in extra time. What was more remarkable was the fact that 2 Caldicot players had been sent off but still Undy scrapped the victory. Paul Harris 1, Lewis Cutajar 1 and Alex Watkins were Caldicot's scorers.

Weekend Roundup

Welsh League

Caldicot first team faced bottom of the second division outfit Llangeinor in the 2nd round of the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup but came unstuck losing 2-1. After last weeks defeat and exit from the Welsh cup against Port Talbot, this was the perfect opportunity for Caldicot to bounce back but this was not to be. Jason Thorn was Caldicot's scorer and should have added to his solitary goal but several chance were squandered. Caldicot now face a tough test this coming Friday the 13th against sea siders Afan Lido which kicks off at 7.45pm

Caldicot Reserves faced a tough away trip to Newport YMCA in the first round of the league cup and after beating them comfortably in the league a few weeks earlier, YM looked a different outfit. Caldicot had a strong side however but wasted chances to open the scoring. YM took the lead and looked dangerous at set pieces. Into the second half and YM got off to the perfect start when scoring first to make it 2-0. Caldicot made all there substitutions and went behind further after a superb solo goal by Jamie Martin to make it 3-0. Rob Bailey pulled one back but Neil Windsor picked up an injury and had to leave the field which left Caldicot down to 10 men. New signing Kojo Ofori scored 2 dramatic late goals to make it 3-3 and should have sealed it with a shot that whizzed by the far post. Into extra time and YM scored first which took the wind out of Caldicot's sails, but soon YM sub Ryan Holyoaks was dismissed for a second yellow card. In the second half of extra time Caldicot won a penalty and with Windsor off the field Kojo stepped up to take it to claim a hatrick but agonisingly he hit it straight down the middle into the keeper arms. YM went straight up the other end and sealed the game with a late breakaway goal. Although Caldicot lost it had been a brave comeback and they will look back on chances missed during the whole 120 minutes. YM however deserved their victory and progress through to the next round.

East Gwent

Caldicot "A" at the third time of asking came up trumps against Undy "A" beating them 2-0 at Undy. Paul Light kept up his great scoring run after adding another goal to his tally and Lee Jeremiah who also has been good scoring form sealed the much needed win for Frank Rowberry's team.

Caldicot "B" cruised to a 4-1 win over Undy "B" with goals coming from Will McConnell, Andrew Edwards Snr, Jordan Hobbs, and an own goal to seal yet another victory for Steve Bright's men

Weekend Roundup

Caldicot went out of the Welsh Cup losing 3-0 to match favorites Port Talbot. Caldicot were holding there own up till the 20 minute mark but a controversial decision led to Steve Edwards being dismissed after he handled a corner that was glancing in. Edwards was guarding the back post when the ball came at him at head height and the midfielder instinctively put his hand up to stop the ball. The referee asked his assistant who confirmed that the ball had not crossed the line and so the red card and penalty award were inevitable. Caldicot were understandably upset by this decision and were unable to regain there composure for some time after and gave away several free kicks that were all deemed bookable offences by the match official who was having a large influence in the game. To there credit, Caldicot were able to keep Port Talbot at bay for the rest of the half and so trailed 1-0 at the break. The second half was a calmer affair with the referee showing more constraint with his decisions but Caldicot were up against it with Port Talbot dominating most of the possession due the numerical advantage, extra quality and experience. Chances for the home side were rare and often from long range so Talbot keeper Lee Kendall had a quite day, however James Smallcombe at the other end was being severely tested but the Caldicot stopper was outstanding with assured handling a great reflex saves to keep the visitors at bay. Tiredness crept in and Port Talbot worked the Caldicot defence well and were rewarded with a further 2 goals to see out the match in comfort. Good Luck to Mark Jones and his team in the next round where they have been drawn away to AberystwythTown. Mean while Jason Pritchard and Simon Wetter and all supporters at the game can be proud of how the boys performed whilst down to ten and have another cup game to look forward to next week when Caldicot host Llangeinor at home in round 2 of the league cup. A big thanks to all the committee and supporters who helped out in the organising of this event.

East Gwent

Caldicot "A" beat Wyesham "A" at home by a 3-0 scoreline. Paul Light scored his 13th of the season one behind leader Shane Jeremiah with further goals added by Lee Jeremiah, his 5th of the season and substitute Matt Williamson.

Caldicot "B" went on the rampage against Wyesham "B" scoring 10 unanswered goals. Simon Hathaway took his total to 5 for the season after scoring a hatrick which was followed by a brace from Mitchell Slape. further goals were added by Rob "Dynamite" Keates, John McGinty, Dan Lynch, Ben Antell and William McConnell. Both east gwent sides face Undy Athletic next weekend.

Under 16's

Darren Canty's youngsters faced a stern test against a strong Wesley side who sit 2nd in the league but Caldicot did take the lead before going into half time with the scores level at 1-1. Caldicot had a player dismissed which affected the outcome and Wesley went on to win 5-1.

Week Ahead

Caldicot Reserves host Cwmbran Celtic tonight in a re-arranged fixture due to the first team being in Welsh Cup action on Saturday. Ko has been pushed back to 7pm

Club Improvements continue at the club and with that comes some sad news.....The old shed often referred to as "Colsey's Shed" has at last been demolished and is being replaced with a new metal one. A big thanks to all the guys that have helped out in the construction, Tony Steven, Mike Windsor, Archie McKay, John Powell and Alun, Geoff and Wally who have been tearing their hair out in performing the construction of the new shed.

In other news, the Scaffolding tower will be erected on Thursday in preparation for the visit of the S4C camera that will be filming the Welsh Cup game against Premiere League Port Talbot. This event does not happen often for the club so it will be all hands the pump on Saturday to ensure the day runs smooth.

Weekend Roundup

Welsh League

Caldicot Town 1st team came out on top in this 5 goal thriller. Ton Pentre took an early lead with a strong wind behind them. Caldicot struggled to make any headway through the first half and Ton looked likely to add to their total but Caldicot survived to go into the break trailing by one goal. With the wind behind Caldicot's backs in the second half, Caldicot got off to the perfect start when Gareth Cullimore equalised with less than 5 minutes played. Caldicot looked more of a threat now and scored again through Cullimore to put Town 2-1 ahead but then the heavens opened and a torrential downpour came down which made playing conditions hard for both teams. That said during this time Ton fashioned an equaliser after Caldicot lost possession of the ball at the back and a well timed run from the Ton midfielder saw him latch on to a pass with just Smallcombe to beat which he did to level the game at 2-2. Once again though Caldicot showed determination and took the lead for the final time when Peter Little found space down the left to place a pin point cross onto the head of Mark Williams who deflected his header into the corner to seal the game. Caldicot surged forward for more goals which caused anxiety for the Caldicot management but the day was won and Caldicot deserved the points.

East Gwent

With no Reserve team game on Saturday, Caldicot "A" were able to strengthen their side but this was to no avail as a strong Undy side which has some good experienced players came out on top 2-1. Tony Jones was credited with Caldicot's goal but this defeat has seriously damaged any thoughts of a push for the title

Caldicot "B" faced Undy "B" at Undy and came out on top winning 4-2. Mark O'Hara bagged another two goals for the season and further goals from Simon Hathaway and Will McConell sealed another fine win for Caldicot "B".

23 October 2009

Weekend Preview

Caldicot Town 1st team face a tough home game against Ton Pentre who put Caerleon to the sword during the week when they beat them 4-0. Caldicot will have to tighten things up defensively and should see the return of captain Gareth Heywood and Steve Edwards this week which should help Caldicot's chances in keeping out the free scoring visitors. Although Caldicot were beaten last week they still managed to score 3 goals and as long as that keeps happening I'm sure more games will be won than lost. Last week saw Alan Johnson deputise for the ill James Smallcombe but unfortunately for Alan he broke his arm in 3 places! Not a debut to remember I know.....still the club would like to wish Alan a speedy recovery.

East Gwent - With no Reserve team game on Saturday, Caldicot "A" face a tough test against unbeaten Undy Athletic "A" who defeated Caldicot earlier in the season. I am sure Big Franks boys will be looking to settle that score

Caldicot "B" face Undy "B" at Undy and will be looking for yet another victory off the back of the teams exciting cup win over Blackrock last week which was won on penalties.

Sunday - Caldicot 1st team travel the short distance to Caerleon in the 1/4 final of the Gwent Senior Cup. Ko is at 2.30pm with the victors facing Monmouth Town away in the Semi Final.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS

Weekend Roundup

Caldicot Town 1st team went down 5-3 away at Taffs Well. Caldicot suffered bad luck when reserve team keeper Alan Johnson who had been called up to deputise for the ill James Smallcombe, had to be replaced before half time with a suspected broken arm. Caldicot trailed 4-1 at half time but came out with more purpose in the second period but it was too little to late in the end. Caldicot's goals came courtesy of an own goal, Gareth Cullimore and Dominic Connor

Caldicot 1st team play Ton Pentre next week in the Welsh League and then face Caerleon at Coldbath Road on the Sunday in the Gwent Senior Cup Ko 2.30pm. The winners of this tie will face Monmouth Town who are already through courtesy of a 2-0 away win at Newport County.

Caldicot Reserves were held at home 1-1 against a spirited Monmouth Town side. Caldicot under performed in the first half but improved to dominate large parts of the second half but luck was against them as a deflected shot beat stand in keeper James Lawrence to put them 1-0 up with 20 minutes remaining. Caldicot huffed and puffed but struggled to find the final ball that would unlock the strong Monmouth defence. With minutes remaining substitute Andrew Bundock made an impact when setting up Andrew Edwards who finished well to make it 1-1. Leighton Burrows played well on his return from injury and nearly stole all the points at the end but his shot went agonisingly wide.

Caldicot "A" came out on top of their Gill cup clash with Caldicot Castle "A" after winning 7-1 at home. Paul Light grabbed a hatrick that was matched by Lee Jeremiah with the other goal coming from Mark Beresford.

Caldicot "B" squeezed by Blackrock Rovers on penalties in their Fishwick cup clash. The game finished 1-1 after full time with Dan Mullens scoring from the spot. The game finished 2-2 after extra time where Dan Mullen was on target from the spot and so onto penalties. 8 Penalties were amazingly missed but Caldicot edged it in the end 5-4 to reach the semi finals.

Weekend Preview

Caldicot 1st team will be looking to get back on track having suffered a 1-0 home defeat  against Garden Village. Late news is that Keeper James Smallcombe is out through illness whilst Captain Gareth Heywood and Steve Edwards are missing through work commitments. The Reserves who have been flying this season will therefore be without Alan Johnson (GK), Simon Crook (RB), Shane Jeremiah (MF) and Ben Roberts (CB) who have all been called up to face Taffs Well away.

The Reserves are home against Monmouth who are the only team to put a blemish on Caldicot's near perfect season so far when they beat Caldicot 3-2 at home. Caldicot will be looking to avenge that defeat I'm sure but will face them once again with out a recognised Goal Keeper. That said James Lawrence (AKA the "Pig") will deputize and is more than capable between the sticks.

Caldicot "A" face Castle "A" at home in the Gill cup this weekend. Both sides met last week with Caldicot scoring 11 unanswered goals. Big Frank will be missing a few individuals but will be hoping his side do not show any complacency.

Caldicot "B" take on Blackrock Rovers for a place in the Fishwick cup semi finals having played each other last week which saw Rovers win 3-2. Manager Steve Bright returns this week and will be looking for an improved performance which will hopefully lead to his side claiming silverwear in their first season.

Good Luck to all teams today!

Weekend Roundup

Caldicot Town 1st - Were beaten at home 1-0 by Garden Village who gained revenge for last weeks defeat by Caldicot in the Welsh Cup. The win see's Village replace Caldicot in 3rd place and Caldicot slip to 6th. Village took the lead after 5 minutes of play but Caldicot created several chances that could have seen them win comfortably. The Argus sports writer Terry Daley put the curse on Caldicot in his weekend article by commenting on how the goals have been flowing at Jubilee Way but thats why they call it the "Commentators Curse". Caldicot face Taffs Well away next and will look to get things back on track.

Caldicot Reserves - Went on the rampage in Aberbargoed yesterday scoring nine unanswered goals (Welsh League website states 10 but it was 9) which saw Tyrone Tucker-Dixon close in on Shane Jeremiah on the goalscoring chart with 4 goals but Jeremiah was on hand twice to score two headers. Will Vers came off the bench to notch his third of the season while Luke Harris and John Reed were the other scorers. Caldicot remain top and play Monmouth at home and will be looking to gain revenge on the only side to beat them this season.

Caldicot Town "A" - Caldicot A went one ....well two better than the reserves when they scored 11 unanswered goals against Caldicot Castle. Paul Light, Rob Bailey and Alex Watkins grabbed a brace each with further goals coming from Tom Moore, Lee Moreton, James Lawrence, Adrian Porter and Mark Beresford. Caldicot play host to the same opponents in next weeks Gill Cup match.

Caldicot Town "B" - lost there first game of the season going down 3-2 to Blackrock Rovers at home. Mark O'Hara continued his good scoring form bagging both of Caldicot's goals. Caldicot face Blackrock again in the Fishwick cup where the winners will claim a place in the semi finals.

Caldicot Town U16's - Caldicot  0 Rogerstone 3
Up against one of the strongest and more fancied teams Caldicot can look back on this performance and defeat with some hope. Three goals were conceded within a 10 minute spell during the first half. Over the top and through the middle. The Pace of their strikers catching us out each time. A little re-organisation at half time cut out that threat and we went onto dominate the second half without actually scoring. Town hit the post, crossbar and their goalie pulled off a couple of good saves. We need to learn quick as our mistakes are being punished this season whilst at the other end we are missing chances and do not seem to be having much luck in front of goal.

Caldicot Ladies: Game was once again cancelled as the opposition could not muster a team

Weekend Roundup

Caldicot Town 1st - Caldicot travelled west to face Garden Village in the 2nd round of the Welsh Cup and came through in the end via extra time.In blustery conditions Caldicot played with the wind in the first half and should have scored through Thorn and Morley, instead they found themselves 2-0 down at the interval after Rimmer had given Village the lead which was added to after Caldicot failed to deal with a flicked on header which was latched onto and lobbed over Smallcombe. Caldicot came out firing after the break and pulled a goal back to give them a chance. Although Caldicot dominated most of the second half, Village nearly scored on the break but Caldicot piled on the pressure only to find a resolute backline standing in there way. With time almost up the Village hit the self destruct button when there right back handled in the area and a penalty was awarded and the player dismissed. David Lloyd tucked away the spot kick to force extra time. A man down and Village were up against it and soon found themselves 3-2 down and then suffered further pain when the Village Keeper reacted against Thorn and was also dismissed and another penalty awarded which again Lloyd put away to make it 4-2. Thorn then hit a 35 yarder which the wind carried over the stand-in keeper before a 6th was added to make the scoreline look impressive.

Caldicot Reserves - Played there home fixture on Friday night at Jubilee Way under the lights and put in an impressive performance against Cwmbran Town beating them 5-0 to make it 4 wins out of 5. The first half was a tight affair with Cwmbran keeping five at the back which Caldicot struggled to break down. Dave Jenkins was bundled over in the box and Tucker-Dixon tucked away the penalty to put Caldicot 1-0 up which was the score at the break. Caldicot came out strong and Tucker-Dixon was on hand to make it 2-0 after Reed crossed from the right and Tucker-Dixon scored a spectacular overhead kick. Cwmbran heads dropped and they went to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation which just helped Caldicot extend their lead. Luke Harris came on replacing Tom Moore and Shane Jeremiah replaced Rob Bailey on the left. Both players made an impression but it was the hard working Jenkins who added the third goal after rounding the keeper to slot home. Alex Watkins came on to replace Tucker-Dixon and scored with a diving header and the rout was finished off by Jeremiah who was more determined than the Cwmbran goalkeeper and defender to get to the ball first when sliding in to finish well. Caldicot face Aberbargoed away next week and will be looking to push on again as competition for places increases.

Caldicot Town "B" - With Caldicot "A" not playing, Caldicot "B" travelled the short distance to play Chepstow Athletic. Caldico won the game 4-2 which see's them still remain unbeaten. Scorers to be confirmed.

Caldicot U16’s away to Race. (3-3 score draw)

Six regulars were unavailable for this fixture due to injuries and other commitments. Having to make so many changes affected the shape and performance of the team in the 1st half. This resulted with the team being outplayed and 2-0 down at the break. Strong words were said at the interval and several changes made. The team then showed their character and quality and went 3-2 up. With minutes remaining Race scored to level the match. Score draw fair result on the day. Well done to the lads for showing such fight and desire in the 2nd half.

Scorers Jamie Watts, Tom Atkins & Rhys Jones.

Weekend Roundup

Caldicot 1st team were rampant as they demolished Dinas Powys 6-0 at Jubilee way on Saturday. Caldicot move up to 3rd in the table and go into next weeks Welsh Cup round two game away to Garden Village in buoyant mood. Thorn 2, Cullimore 1, Sharratt, S.Edwards and new signing Jacob Guy all with one a piece. Match Report to follow:

Caldicot Reserves lost their first game of the season thanks to a disastrous first 15 minutes when they found themselves 3-0 down. Caldicot dominated lots of the possession after that but struggled to find the cutting edge required. The second half saw a much better display and Andrew Edwards and Tyrone Tucker-Dixon pulled two goals back Edwards who hit the post in the first half repeated the feat in the second after again coming close with a header. Monmouth are now three wins out of three but Caldicot stay on top due to a superior goal difference.  Caldicot next face Cwmbran Town at home.

Caldicot "A" romped to a 10-2 home in over a poor Sudbrook side. Shane Jeremiah bagged another hatrick but this week was joined by Paul Light who also scored three. Scott McKeon grabbed a brace and further goals were added by James Lawrence and Mark Beresford.

Caldicot "B" Game against Sudbrook "B" was called off as Sudbrook could not field a team. Just like last week the "Bs" will be awarded a 5-0 win but the situation needs looking at by the league if this farce continues

Caldicot U16’s won their 2nd Gwent County match against Mardy 2-1. Despite making a good start to the game Caldicot made hard work in achieving all 3 pts. Caldicot have now P4, W2, D1 and L1. A reasonable start to the season considering the loss of so many of last’s year’s regulars to rugby and other sports.

Carl Evans Memorial game - This year saw a return to a competitive fixture as Mathern Veterans provided the opposition for this annual game in memory of Carl. A select Caldicot XI ran out 4-1 winners in a game enjoyed by all. A big thanks to Jeremy "Graham Poll" Gates for refereeing the game and to Jimmy Edwards for organising the Mathern team and to all the players giving up there time to remember Carl. A big thanks also to Gareth "Lenny" Jones for making the after match obligatory ring burner of a curry and to Big Vern for helping in the kitchen.

22 September 2009

Caldicot Town would like to welcome back to the club Jacob Guy who has signed from his spell at Almondsbury Town. Jacob was missed last season and his strengths that he brings to the club will I'm sure be appreciated by the current management team of Wetter & Pritchard who already have a strong squad at their disposal. The current situation where players are often missed through Suspensions, work or holidays will mean that Guy will surely get his chance to show the Caldicot faithful what they have been missing. Caldicot are through to the second rounds of both the Welsh Cup and League Cup and sit in 5th position in the league with a game in hand on two of the teams above them.

Such is the depth of strength of players at the club at the moment the Reserve team is reaping the benefit as they have started the season well notching up there third straight league win that see's them top the table. This Saturday will see the return of at least three players to the 1st team so there will be more players moving into the teams below as a result. Competition is therefore very high amongst the players and the reward for this is seeing all teams including the East Gwent teams well positioned in there respective leagues.

Long may it continue

Weekend Roundup:

Caldicot 1st

Caldicot faced a tough home game in the first round of the Nathaniel Car Sales League Cup against Penrhiwceiber Rangers who sit top of the Welsh League second division but came through winning 3-1. Richard Sharratt, Gareth Cullimore and Mark Williams were Caldicot's scorers. Caldicot now face Llangeinor at home in the second round which is being played on Saturday 7th November

Reserves

Caldicot Town Reserves were once again away but the short journey to face Newport YMCA was a successful one with Caldicot running out comfortable 5-1 winners. Caldicot took the lead through Tucker-Dixon who volleyed home after a quick freekick from Windsor was headed back across the area by Dave Jenkins. Caldicot doubled there lead after great hassling work from Alex Watkins on the left saw him cross to the far right post where John Reed was on hand to hit a crisp volley into the net. Before the half was through Caldicot went 3-0 up once again through Tucker-Dixon who finished well after Windsor's searching long pass found him in space. Caldicot took there foot off the gas a little and YM pulled one back through there number 6 who lashed in a volley from 35 yards that saw the ball beat Johnson in Caldicot's goal. Nick Bright was replaced with concussion and the hard working Tom Moore was also replaced by Martin Michalk and Rado Newridy both summer signings from Slovakia and Alex Watkins was replaced by another new signing Rob Bailey. The 19 year old scored with his first touch after Tucker-Dixon's flick on was met by Bailey who cooly rounded the keeper before slotting home to make it 4-1 before he struck again with minutes remaining after Man of the Match Lewis Cutajar found Bailey on the right in space. The makeshift striker carried the ball forward towards the edge of the YM area before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the far top corner to make it 5-1. The Reserves are now 3 out of 3 having scored a total of 13 and conceeding only 2 and are on the road again next Saturday where they face Monmouth Town.

East Gwent

Both games were cancelled with the "A" team calling there game against Wyesham "A" last Saturday but the "B" team were due to play Wyesham "B" but amazingly they were unable to field a side even though there 1st team were not in action so Caldicot "B" was also called off late.

Ladies

The Ladies game has been cancelled due to the away side not getting a team

Saturday 12th September 2009

Weekend Roundup

Caldicot 1st team made the long journey west to visit South Gower in the first round of the Welsh Cup. Although the score was 5-0 the game could have been different had SG not missed a first half penalty when the scores were 0-0 after Andrew Edwards was dismissed for apparently blocking a goalbound effort with his arm. James Smallcombe saved the resulting penalty before Caldicot took control even though the home side had the numerical advantage. Dominic Connor bagged his first and second goals for Caldicot before further goals were added by Thorn & Cullimore.

Caldicot Reserves made the short journey to take on Cwmbran Celtic and triumphed 3-1. Caldicot were ahead at the break after Ben Roberts played a high ball forward towards Tucker-Dixon who hit it on the volley into the bottom of the net to make it 1-0. Celtic will always put in a battling performance and made life difficult for Caldicot who went 2-0 up after Luke Harris played a long ball into the corner which saw Tucker-Dixon outpace the defender to collect the ball before playing it from the left to the edge of the box where Will Vers scored his second in two games with a low side footed shot into the bottom corner. A third was added when once again Harris played the ball into the corner for Tucker-Dixon who collected the pass and took on the centre half nut megging him before he was dragged down in the box for a penalty which he dispatched with ease. Celtic rallied and pulled a goal back after a mix up between Johnson and Roberts saw the Celtic forward nip in and shoot home. Caldicot weathered the storm and held out comfortably in the end.

Caldicot "A" took on Chepstow "A" away but came off second best as they slumped to a 5-4 defeat. With the scores 2-2 at half time, Caldicot came out stronger in the second half and were 4-2 up with 15 minutes left, however mistakes cost the home side dearly and Chepstow came back well to pinch the points. Dave Smith with a brace, Mark Beresford and Lee Jeremiah were Caldicot's scorers.

Caldicot "B" were hosts to Chepstow "B" and salvaged a 3-3 draw to keep their 100% record of not losing intact. Caldicot were awarded a penalty but missed and Chepstow capitalised and went in 1-0 up at the break. Chepstow made it 2-0 after just 10 minutes of the second half before Mitchell Slape got Caldicot back in the game with a shot from the edge of the box that made it 2-1 before Mark O'Hara scored to make it 2-2. Chepstow were then awarded a penalty which they scored to make it 3-2 with minutes remaining bit Caldicot's hero, Mark O'Hara was on hand again to pounce on a goalkeeping error to make it 3-3. Caldicot could have snatched an unlikely win when Eddie Edwards lashed a shot towrads goal that was saved well by the Chepstow keeper.

Caldicot Ladies 0 v 14 Swansea City Ladies "B"

Caldicot Ladies opened their season with a tough away trip to Swansea. The first half hour was hard fought with the score remaining even, Caldicot defending well and attacking on the break. An obvious hand-ball by a Swansea defender saw the whole game disintegrate into a farce. The referee played on and a comment made by Jess Pearson was deemed to be enough for the referee to brandish a straight red card, with no prior warning or pre-match chat. The numerical advantage became apparent as Swansea scored three goals before half-time.

The second half proved to be too much for Caldicot, when a similar incident occurred and Kelly Lewis received her marching orders from the referee. With the score at 5-0, the nine players of Caldicot ran out of steam in the last fifteen minutes and conceded a further nine goals.

Weekend Roundup

It was Goals, Goals, Goals for all the Caldicot Town sides this weekend where all four teams played at the same time for the first time this season. I'm sure a few eyes would have expected to see the two East Gwent sides struggle as the so called "Ringers" would be playing for the First and Reserves teams. However there is great strength in depth that has not been the case for some years which has proven to be a massive positive as all players fight to keep there place in the respective teams they turn out for.

1st Team - Jason Pritchard & Simon Wetter took their team to Clydach Vale yesterday to face a tough test against a team that put 6 past reigning champions, Aberaman in there last game. Caldicot under performed on the day and found themselves 3-0 down. Richard Sharratt pulled a goal back for Caldicot in the 85th minute and this was followed by an own goal (apparently a good one!!) and then the home sides nerves got the better of them as Jason Thorn scored with no time left on the clock. A massive blow for the homeside but joy for Caldicot who know they got out of jail.

Reserves - Caldicot Reserves opened their campaign to the new season with a fine 5-0 win over Caerleon. Caldicot lost Ben Miles before the end of the 1st half when he was sandwiched in a fall that saw him suffer a double fracture of his wrist. Lewis Cutajar came on into the middle and had a really good game and Caldicot lead at the break 1-0 thanks to a Joe Martin goal. The game was still in the balance but Caldicot came out firing after the interval and further goals from Tyrone Tucker-Dixon, Lewis Cutajar were followed by a great left foot shot from Vers that found the top corner before Joe Martin beat the offside trap to make it 5-0.

Caldicot "A" - Frank Rowberry's boys took on Rockfield Rovers at home and although they ended up with 10 men after Dave Heyward was dismissed they still managed to win 9-0. Shane Jeremiah with a hatrick was closely followed by a brace from his Farther Ray with other goals coming from Paul Light, Adrian Porter, Scott McKeon and Matt Williamson.

Caldicot "B" - Do not under estimate how hard Steve Bright's job is in managing the "B" team as you are often left with a scratch side but such is the depth of players available the B's managed to also score 9 goals as they beat new boys Severn Tunnel "B" by a 9-2 scoreline. Dan Mullen with 2 followed by goals from Rob Keats, Mark O'Hara, Steve Bright (Manager) Mark Beresford, Steve Heppel, Josh Pritchard and Andrew Edwards Snr.

The Midweek Roundup

East Gwent:

Caldicot "B" took on Undy "B" at home last night and came away with a 3-1 victory. Rob Keats claimed the first goal after beating his man then rounding the keeper before slotting home with his left foot to make it 1-0. Returning from Injury, Alex Watkins was able to open his account for the season to make it 2-0 before Tom Moore hit a looping 45 yard shot into the goal to make it 3-0. In the 89th minute Undy scored a consolation goal that was the first to be conceded this season by Steve Hepple in the Caldicot goal.

Caldicot "A" suffered their first defeat of the season when they lost away at Undy "A" by a 3-2 scoreline. Simon Crook and Paul Light were Caldicot's scorers

Tuesday 1st September 2009

The Weekend Roundup

Caldicot 1st team:

The first gained another point at home against a team many regard as potential champions. Bridgend however have been a bit hit and miss so far this season although it is very early days. In what sounded an exciting game which ended 4-4, Caldicot's Gareth Cullimore netted another 2 goals with Jason Thorn and Mark Williams bagging the others. Caldicot found themselves on level terms until Bridgend scored a 4th late on however Caldicot pinched an equaliser late into injury time. Caldicot face a tough trip up to Cambrian next Saturday the 5th September

Caldicot Reserves:

The 1st round draw has been made for the McWhirter League Reserve cup and Caldicot will be drawn away to the winners of the match between Corus Steel v Newport YMCA

Caldicot Reserves 2 v 0 Avonmouth FC

Caldicot Reserves finished off their Pre-season fixtures with a hard fought 2-0 win over Avonmouth FC. A huge squad had to be whittled down to accommodate 4 first team players and start a few players who have been on holidays so disappointingly a few lads had to sit this one out. Avonmouth had a slow start but found there feet after 10 minutes and were not shy in dishing out the physical stuff. Caldicot replied in kind and so referee Mark Gardiner was going to have his hands full. Caldicot took the lead in the 1st half and led into the break. The second half was as hard fought as the first but Dave Hayward in the Caldicot goal only had one save to make of any note throughout the second period. Caldicot were

awarded a penalty which was confidently tucked away by Neil Windsor and the only disappointing aspect was that Caldicot did not add to there total. The real games start next Saturday the 5th at home against Caerleon which is a 2.30pm Ko

Caldicot Town 0 v 1 Aberaman Athletic

Caldicot 1st team went up to Aberaman in confident mood but were disappointed to lose by a single goal which came from a defensive mistake. Aberaman setbetter team throughout the first half with Caldicot's Dan Rowberry coming the closest to scoring when he had a free header at a corner. Gareth Cullimore had a good effort saved which the keeper collected and kicked long down field, the ball beating the impressive Wenzel which left the hesitant Smallcombe in no mans land as the Aberaman player collected the ball rounded Smallcombe and placed the ball in the net just beating the despairing dive of Captain Gareth Heywood. The second half saw a much improved Caldicot performance and I think it would be fair to say that the away side dominated most of the half. Wayne Morley came close after a jinking run and bullet shot was saved. Then the bizarre happened. After some heavy rain during the day a puddle had formed in the goal away to the right of the stand and David Lloyd played through a perfectly weighted ball to the lively Thorn who poked it past the keeper only to see his effort cleared as it stopped dead in the puddle. A certain goal for sure and no less than Caldicot would have deserved. Late pressure could not produce the elusive equaliser but Caldicot should not beat themselves up over this performance. Lat season they lost 5-1 here such is the expectation after you win the first 3 league games!! Caldicot face Bridgend next and will hope that they get their slice of luck in that game.

Tuesday 25th August 2009

                                Caldicot Town "B" 9 v 0 Chepstow Athletic

Caldicot Town "B" made a winning start in the newly formed East Gwent division 3. Under caretaker boss Steve Bright, Caldicot made a blistering start as Luke Harris scored the first of his 5 goals. Tom Moore and fellow former under 18's player Mitchell Slape got in on the act as Moore grabbed and brace and Slape grabbing one with new signing Simon Hathaway also claiming a goal in what became a 9-0 route.

Monday 24th August 2009

                                              Caldicot Town "A" 3 v 0 Tintern

Caldicot Town "A" got off to the best start possible in this seasons revamped East Gwent league when they defeated last years champions Tintern by 3-0. Shane Jeremiah, veteran Tony Jones and a spectacular long range freekick from new boy Pal Light ensured victory for Big Frank's men

Saturday 22nd August 2009

Caldicot Town 3 v 0 Ely Rangers

Caldicot Town sit proudly at the top of the Welsh League division one after they won their 3rd straight game in a row beating Ely Rangers who were promoted last season. Caldicot striker Gareth Cullimore hit 3 first half goals to seal the win which see's them just above Wednesday nights opponents Aberaman on goal difference. Caldicot topped the table early on last season but slumped dramatically after Christmas but this years squad looks to have more strength in depth so with a bit of luck the results will keep coming now the team is gaining momentum.

Milkwall 1 v 3 Caldicot Town

Caldicot Reserves were in action on Saturday when they visited Milkwall which is situated near Coleford. Joe Martin opened the scoring after 5 minutes but the home side hit back scoring an equaliser after 10 minutes. Joe Martin scored again to grab his brace making it 2-1at the interval. Lots of subs were made in the second half but Caldicot stayed marginally on top throughout the game with the best Caldicot performance coming from Ben Miles in the centre of midfield. With 2 minutes remaining, new signing Ben Antell found the back of the net to make the game safe.
Caldicot Reserves play Avonmouth FC this coming Friday at Jubilee Way kicking off at 7.30pm

 Caldicot Town v Clevedon Town - 28 July 2009

Caldicot put in a spirited performance at Jubilee Way last night against tough opposition from Clevedon Town who play in the Southern Premiere Division. On a damp evening both sides were competitive as both managers cast there eyes over new and old players jockeying for places in there respective first teams. After 15 minutes Andrew Edwards was played through in the Clevedon area where he finished well past the keeper. Caldicot went in at half time 1-0 up and deservedly so but Clevedon Manager Nick Tucker made some changes in the second half and the visitors took control of the game although a resolute Caldicot back line kept Clevedon at bay. After 55 mins Clevedon equalised after good work down the left saw a Clevedon midfield player run in unnoticed into the Caldicot area to finish past James Smallcombe. Clevedon piled on the pressure as Caldicot changed the team around and eventually on 85 minutes Clevedon got there rewards with the winner.

A good well contested game which hopefully helped both managers learn a few things about the players they have at there disposal.

 Caldicot Town v Morriston Olympic - 25 July 2009

Clevedon Town are the next visitors to Jubilee Way on Tuesday 28th July and will provide a tough test for Caldicot who got there first win under there belts after defeating yesterdays visitors Morriston Olympic by a 2-0 scoreline. Morriston also brought an U16 side down and they defeated Darren Canty's team 4-0 and also a 2nd team that lost to Caldicot Reserves by an 8-0 scoreline.

Caldicot Town AFC 2009/2010 Season

Caldicot Town 1 v 8 Newport County

Caldicot Town were outclassed (and rightly so) by a strong Newport County squad aiming for promotion this season to the Conference. With just 2 weeks of pre-season training under there belts the Caldicot squad struggled to compete with Newport who got off to the perfect start when Kevin Cooper fired in a deflected shot after 3 minutes. The pitch played well after a full day of heavy rain so testament to the hard work put in through the summer by all involved. County punished any mistake made by the homeside who scored a consolation goal through a David Lloyd penalty. 3-1 down at the break Caldicot changed personnel but feared no better as County stepped on the gas and scored another five unanswered goals. Although the scoreline was disappointing the evening was still a success and the club is grateful to the Newport management for supporting Caldicot in providing us with a friendly. We wish Dean and all his team well for the upcoming campaign

The first friendly of the season is upon us shortly and is the pick of of the games arranged for pre-season as Dean Holdsworth's Newport County will be the visitors to Jubilee Way although they will know there way around the Caldicot facility as it is where they have been training for there pre-season through an arrangement made between the two clubs. Apart from the friendly which will hopefully be well supported by supporters of both teams, Dean is trying to arrange an "All Stars" game due to be played in August at Jubilee Way ground. This will boost the coffers of the club through bar revenue and project a high profile for our facility that is currently going through a renovation especially the Mike Johnson Lounge.

Caldicot Town AFC 3rd Team - East Gwent Watkin Shield Winners 2008/09

Wednesday 13 May

Caldicot Reserves finished off their season in 7th place after securing a 1-1 draw against 3rd placed Cambrian & Clydach. Alex Watkins was Caldicot's scorer which saw the home side play James "The Pig" Lawrence in goal as neither Smallcombe or regular reserve team keeper NicK Hardy available. The Pig was later awarded the man of the match for his fine display that will send a shiver down 3rd team misfit Dave "Wayward" Heyward.

Tuesday 12 May

Caldicot 1st team travelled to the Rhondda Cynon Taf to play Bridgend who have been playing their home games at the impressive Glamorgan University site at Trefforest Industrial est. On a sunny evening and on an impecible surface Caldicot started well but it was to be the home side who would score first. The impressive left back cut in from the left and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the far top corner. This was a blow to Caldicot who had claims for a penalty waved away by the ref after an incident that was similar to the Anelka penalty claim Chelsea had against Barcelona. In both cases the ref turned down the penalty. Caldicot fought back and got on level terms before the end of the half when Luke Harris smashed in a shot from the edge of the box. The second half was an even affair but towards the end the home side made a telling change which saw more pace in their attack. Neil Windsor who was having a good game brought down the Bridgend forward but the striker hit the post with his penalty. Was this going to be Caldicot's night? With 10 mins remaining Bridgend scored the winner, a flicked on long ball saw the striker who missed the penalty get the wrong side of Haywood to slot home his shot passed Smallcombe. Caldicot pressed for an equaliser but the home side hung on for the win.

Saturday 9th May

Caldicot 1st team drew 0-0 at home against Pontardawe which now see's the Jubilee Way side safe in securing division one status for next season. Although the scores remained 0-0, the game itself was not a dull affair. Pontardawe had the best chance in the first half but Caldicot could have won the game towards the end after creating two good opportunities that were spurned. Caldicot finish with two games against Bridgend knowing that they can relax from any threat against relegation.

Caldicot 3rd team lost at home to Tintern which secured the league for the Abbey side.

Thursday 7th May

Caldicot Reserves won 4-1 last night against Cardiff Corries at home. Tyrone Tucker-Dixon made it 26 goals for the season with Alex Watkins close by on 24 as he added one to his tally. Mark O'hara scored Caldicot's other goal as he makes his comeback from a broken ankle suffered in a pre-season game

Caldicot 3rd team defeated Undy Athletic by 4 goals to 2 last night at home. James Mckeon, Lee Jeremiah, Rob Keats (no i couldn't believe it either!!) and Mark Beresford were Caldicot's scorers. Caldicot now face Tintern at home on Saturday for their last game of the season which Tintern must win to become league winners.....should be interesting then!!

Saturday 25 April 2009

Caldicot 1st team lost 2-1 at home to Newport YMCA in what turned out to be a disappointing day for the home side who were looking to build on the last couple of performances. A strong wind and a hard pitch were always going to make things hard for both sides although Newport had the better chances in the 1st half even though they went in 1-0 down at the break after Wayne Morley had scored a great individual goal. Newport had the strong breeze behind them now and scored in the first 5 minutes of the second half after a fortuitous high ball was misjudged and the ball bounced back into ply off the crossbar and into the path of a Newport player to make it 1-1. The rest of the match was an even affair until Mark Williams hit a post with a powerful drive only to see Newport steal the winner with 5 minutes remaining. Young talent Lewys Dowler was fouled crudely and had to be stretchered off with a knee injury to spoil Caldicot's day.

Caldicot Reserves got back to winning ways after overcoming Pontyclun away from home by a 3-1 scoreline. Alex Watkins bagged another for the season but was sent off for dissent after 20 minutes. A good result for the lads under those circumstances.

Caldicot 1st team
travelled to Ento Aberaman and were yet again soundly beaten by a 5-1 scoreline for the third week running away from home. Unlike the matches at Cardiff Corries and Croesyceiliog, Caldicot's performance for 60 minutes was improved by 100%. Having taken the lead through Lewys Dowler Caldicot went into the break with the scores at 1-1. Ento's attractive football eventually wore down the Caldicot lads and the usual mistakes crept in late on with a sprinkling of bad luck from that invisible Irish fella who plays against us most weeks called Rick-o-shay who frequently plays in centre forwards from our defenders clearances!! When the dust had settled the scoreline read 5-1 which is hard to take but hopefully another win in the last 6 matches will see us safe for another year.

Saturday 11th April 2009

Caldicot 1st team
suffered another heavy defeat away from home at the hands of Bettws. Caldicot trailed by 2 goals after just ten minutes after more sloppy defending was made to pay. Caldicot rallied in the second half and with around 15 minutes left and pulled one back after persistent pressure from David Lloyd saw his effort deflected in. Caldicot pushed for the equaliser and were caught napping when Bettws won a freekick which was knocked wide to an unmarked player who crossed for the Bettws forward to head home. Bettws added a 4th with just minutes remaining to seal the victory.

Caldicot Reserves
got there form back on track after defeating Cardiff Corries 4-1 at home. Jordan Hobbs, Ben Miles, Lewis Cutajar and Mark O'hara were Caldicot's scorers.

Caldicot 3rds
ran out 4-1 winners and gained revenge on Monmouth Town after losing to them last week. Eddie Edwards with a hatrick and Adrian Porter with Caldicot's goals. Caldicot 3rds have a busy week ahead as they play Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday in their bid for league and cup glory.

Caldicot 3rd team scored 6 goals away at Devauden Green last night but found that it was not enough to take all three points as the home team also scored 6 in a highly entertaining game. James Mckeown with a Hattrick, Simon Crooke, Adrian Porter and Paul Harris Snr were Caldicot's scorers.

Caldicot U18's lost 1-0 away to Cwmbran Celtic.

Wednesday 8th April 2009

Caldicot 1st teams miserable midweek form continued as they were put to the sword by lowly Croesyceiliog who fully deserved their victory. Croesy took a 1-0 lead into the break after a poor goal was conceded from a corner. Caldicot through a great individual goal from Mark Williams equalised early on in the second half before Caldicot were caught again through bad marking. Three more goals were added by Croesy as Caldicot finished the game with ten men after Joe Martin pulled a hamstring on his return to the side.

Tuesday 7th April 2009

Caldicot Reserves lose 2-1 to Garw at home. Another disappointing result for the reserves who have seen there form deteriorate rapidly over the last few weeks after one stage sitting 3rd just 3 points behind leaders Croesyceiliog.

Mathern Vagabonds Veterans v Aston Villa Veterans

A successful day at Caldicot Town AFC as the Veterans from Mathern and Villa slugged it out under the hot sun. Villa ran out 4-1 winners at the end although the scores were one each at halftime with Mathern's goal coming from the evergreen Phil Tranter. Villa's Tony Morley picked up the winners trophy presented by Jimmy Edwards who was grateful for Caldicot Town in hosting the Charity event.

Saturday 4th April 2009

Caldicot Town
suffered another defeat although unlike at Cardiff Corries on Thursday night there were many more positives to take from this game. If only Caldicot could play a top five side every week! There performances against the big teams has been quite impressive but when there is a greater expectation of points they seem to lower there performances which results in points dropped. Goytre were 1-0 up at the break and made it two after another mistake but the boys rallied with the impressive Mo Chambers pulling one back. Caldicot pressed until the end but could not get the equaliser they felt they had deserved.

Caldicot 3rds crashed out of the cup on Saturday going down 5-1 against a strong Monmouth Town side. Anthony Jones suffered a nasty head wound and was taken to hospital but still managed 1/2 a game for Mathern Veterans against Aston Villa on Sunday. Dave "Hollywood" Smith scored the only Caldicot goal which was his 3rd goal in 2 games.

Caldicot faced a strong Bridgend side on Friday night and were trailing by a 1-0 scoreline when Floodlight failure caused the game to be abandoned. Efforts were made to restore the power but after it was found that fuses had blown the match officials had little choice but to abandon the match which will now have to be replayed. Caldicot I am sure will feel the happier of the two teams as Bridgend were looking the more likely side who would go on and win. Apologies to all the supporters, players and officials for the unfortunate events

Wednesday 16th March 2009

Caldicot crashed out of the Gwent Senior Cup Semi Finals losing 5-4 on penalties after 120 minutes of stalemate. Celtic probably had the two best chances to score in the game and were helped when Joe Martin was given a straight red for retaliation after being kicked. Caldicot hung on well for penalties and having beaten Celtic in the league cup by the same method were confident of repeating this feat. It was not to be as the unfortunate Luke Harris was the only player to miss a penalty when his effort hit the crossbar. Well done to Cwmbran who are a side on the up and we wish them well in the final which will be against either Newport County or Newport Civil Service on May 2nd.

Caldicot 1st Team: Caldicot hung on for a point away at Taffs Well on Saturday and had to play the last 20 minutes with 10 men as Mark Williams was shown a straight red card for a challenge that depending on your view could have been deemed a yellow card offence. Taffs Well prior to the sending off had dominated the first half and could have been a few goals up but lack of composure in front of goal cost them the win.

Caldicot 1st Team: Caldicot beat table toppers Bettws 2-1 last night in a thrilling match at Jubilee Way. Dan Rowberry had put the home side in front but the visitors who were reduced to 10 men equalised in the second half but Caldicot sealed the points when David Lloyd set up Joe Martin to score the winner which sparked wild celebrations not so much for it being the winner but more for the fact that Joe had eventually broke his duck after 21 games and got a well deserved goal!!

Caldicot 1st team
were beaten at home on Saturday against a strong Cambrian & Clydach side that made no mistake in letting Caldicot back into the game as they had done the week before. Once again Caldicot created a couple of half chances but unlike there opponents, failed to take them when presented. Cambrian's impressive front two caused the Caldicot defence trouble throughout although honors were even at the break. The visitors came out with more intent in the second half and got there rewards.

Caldicot 1st team
managed a creditable 1-1 draw against table topping Barry Town on Saturday. Kel Stevens was on target again for the Jubilee Way club which saw them go in 1-0 up at the break. A strong fightback was on the cards and Barry did not disappoint backed by there traveling army with flags, trumpets and all. Barry equalised after a great cross from the left and some clever movement by the right winger which saw him get between to defenders to nod in past the helpless Smallcombe to score. The game ebbed and flowed but both sides defended what they had till the finish.

Caldicot 1st team
travelled to Cambrian & Clydach but lost 3-2 in a game that the classic saying "A game of two half's" was designed for. Caldicot's 1st half performance was shocking to say the least and only being 2-0 down at half time was quite fortunate. In the second half Caldicot responded superbly with man of the match Kel Stevens firing in two goals to make the game level. Another sloppy goal (3 in total for the night) scored by the home side eventually saw off a fighting Caldicot performance in the end. Caldicot remain 10th in the league and now face table topping Barry Town at Jubilee way this Saturday.
